Bronxville Varsity Teams Have a Winning Week Highlighted by Football’s 26-7 Win Over Rival Dobbs Ferry

Sep. 17, 2014: Bronxville and Dobbs Ferry have a rivalry that dates back a long time. Bronxville beat Dobbs Ferry during the regular season in 2011, but the football team lost to them in the section final. It was a disappointing loss that was followed by regular season losses in 2012 and 2013. The seniors on this year's team had never beaten Dobbs--until now. Playing at Dobbs on Saturday, the Broncos completely dominated all aspects of the game, handing Dobbs a 26-7 defeat.
After Dobbs scored first to grab an early 6-0 lead, the Bronco line dug in and established itself, and the outstanding line play became the story of the game. Controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, senior linemen Luke Geiling, Steven Ircha, Preston Klimley, and Ted Meyers wreaked havoc, consistently breaking through to the Dobbs backfield for plays resulting either in no gain or in a loss of yardage for Dobbs Ferry. A trio of linebackers, Robby Westerfield, Zach Shively, and Brendan Carty, were standouts as well. After the initial touchdown, Dobbs was held scoreless and never seriously threatened again.
Bronxville's special teams also dominated during the game, with big plays coming from senior Andrew Lemberger and junior Anthony Napolitano. On the offensive side of the ball, the line play enabled the Broncos' offense to move the ball in a variety of ways. Running back Brendan Carty seized the openings created for him, breaking out for over 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the day. Bronxville's other two touchdowns came on passes from Graham Klimley to receiver Charlie Tarry.
After the game, the players assembled on the sideline to serenade the crowd with "Onward Bronxville." Onward for the Broncos is Tuckahoe, which they will face next Saturday evening at 6:30 pm at Tuckahoe under the lights.
Field Hockey
The top-ranked Class C Broncos have opened the season with five straight wins, and in three of those wins, the Broncos kept their opponents from scoring. The defense has only given up two goals so far this season, thanks in part to great playing by Brennan O'Toole and Peyton Elder. The offense has been outstanding, scoring 22 goals so far this season. Briana Alberghine is leading the team with seven goals, and Caroline DePaul has five. Class C Bronxville plays in a league that includes Briarcliff, Edgemont, Sleepy Hollow, and Valhalla, but this week the team will play Class B Rye and Class A Scarsdale.
Girls' Soccer
The Class B Bronxville girls' soccer team has posted four wins so far this fall, including a 1-0 win over neighboring Class A Eastchester in the first annual Eastchester Cup Tournament. In the opening round of the tournament, the Broncos easily defeated Edgemont 5-1. In that game, Beth Finley scored an amazing goal, beating two defenders and putting the ball into the upper corner. In the final game against Eastchester, Lucy Kohlhoff, the lead scorer for the Broncos, scored the lone goal. The Broncos have had three shutouts with great defensive effort from Taylor Sears and keeper Charlie Warble. The team will compete in the annual Broncofest tournament this weekend. The first game is on Friday at 4:30 pm at Chambers against Fox Lane.
Boys' Soccer
The boys' soccer team started off the season tying Blind Brook and losing to Edgemont, but since then it has been on a mission to win. In the last week and a half, it has won five games, two in overtime, outscoring its opponents 18-3. Senior captain Michael Crawford and Joe Pepe have been playing well on defense; on offense, Sam Aherne, John Calabrese, Matthew McCloskey, and James Burnell are the top scorers for the Broncos. The team plays three games this week, including a game against Valhalla on Saturday in the championship round of the Broncofest tournament. Valhalla is ranked #3 in New York State.
Girls' Cross Country
Kaitlin Ryan finished first in the Varsity 2 race at the Red Raider Run held last Saturday at Anthony Wayne State Park in Stony Point. The Bronxville girls' cross country team finished second overall, losing to North Rockland, the hosting team, by two points. Finishing in the top ten for the Broncos were Ryan, Delia Hayes (3rd), Olivia Scotti (8th), and Hilary Rizzo (10th). The Varsity 2 race included ten schools and 69 racers.
Bronxville/Tuckahoe Girls' Swimming
In the first meet of the season, the Bronxville/Tuckahoe girls' team lost to Sleepy Hollow/Hastings/Edgemont/Irvington 95-73. Finishing in first for the Broncos were Nicole Veru (200 free), Maggie O'Reilly (100 butterfly), and the 400m freestyle relay team of O'Reilly, Alisa Fominykh, Lain Miller, and Veru.
Bronxville Girls' Tennis
The tennis team opened the season with a 6-1 over Pleasantville and a 5-2 win over Blind Brook. It has two matches scheduled for this week against Briarcliff and Suffern. Top singles player Chrissy Simon easily won her first two matches, and the top three doubles teams are also undefeated: first doubles players Ava Austi and Eva Dani, second doubles, Juliet Timmins and Lindsey Cruikshank, and third doubles, Krissy Marrinan and Isabelle Shinsato.
