In the first round of the girls' tournament, Valhalla defeated Westlake and the Broncos shut out Fox Lane, setting up a Bronxville/Valhalla championship game. In that final game, the Broncos took an early lead with a goal by senior Lucy Kohlhoff. Valhalla evened the score in the second half, but the Broncos turned up the heat, scoring three more goals for a 4-1 win. Eighth-grader Beth Finley and juniors Fallon Raviol and Taylor Sears each had a goal for the Broncos, and keeper Charlie Warble had seven saves. Kohlhoff, a four-year varsity player, was named tournament MVP. It was Bronxville's seventh Broncofest victory.
The undefeated girls have won eight straight and will face rival Briarcliff at home on Monday, September 29, at 4:30 pm.
In the first round of the boys' tournament held two weeks ago, the Bronxville boys defeated Tuckahoe, which set up a championship game against Section 1 Class B's top-seeded Valhalla. The Vikings, who are ranked third in the state, proved to be too much for the Broncos, blanking them by a score of 4-0. It was only the second loss of the season for the boys' team (5-2-2).
Bronco Football Shut Out Rival Tuckahoe, 23-0
In a Saturday night game under lights, the Broncos handed neighboring Tuckahoe a 23-0 homecoming loss. Before the game, the annual Robert Spenik Award was presented to Bronxville's Steven Ircha and Tuckahoe's Enoch Penney-Laryea. The award recognizes exceptional play and competitive spirit.
For most of the first half, the game was a tough-fought battle between crosstown rivals, and the game remained scoreless. With seconds left in the second quarter, Bronxville's Sam Connors kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead. On Bronxville's first drive of the third quarter, a 30-yard run by Robbie Westerfield and two runs by Brendan Carty gave the Broncos a 10-0 lead. The Broncos added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard pass from Graham Klimley to Charlie Tarry, and that duo scored once more before the game was over.
Next Saturday will be a match between the two undefeated Class C teams, Bronxville and Rye Neck. The game starts at 1:30 pm.
Field Hockey Record Stands at 6-0-1
The Bronxville girls' field hockey team remains undefeated after a 1-1 tie with Rye last Tuesday. Bronco defense and goalie Caroline Cahaney fended off 21 shots to hold Rye to just one score. Girls' Swim Team Defeats Rye, 99-87
The Bronxville girls' swim defeated Rye in a down-to-the-wire competition that was decided by the last race. The 400m free relay team (Maggie O'Reilly, Emily Gjertsen, Lain Miller, and Nicole Veru) stepped up to the blocks knowing that their race would determine the outcome of the meet. They gave it their all, finishing in first with a time of 4:05.80, giving the Bronxville/Tuckahoe team its first victory this season. Other first-place finishers at the meet were Veru (200 free, 100 free), O'Reilly (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Alisa Fominykh (50 free, 100 breaststroke), and the 200 free relay team of Veru, Anneke Pulkkinen, A.
