Broncos Compete at States: Bronxville Girls' Lacrosse, Girls' Track and Field, Boys' Golf and Tennis

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Jun. 3, 2015: It is no wonder that Bronxville is a name that is well recognized across the state. The girls' lacrosse team sailed through its sectional and regional playoff games and will compete for the state championship at SUNY Cortland this coming weekend, and the girls' track and field team, an ever-present force in New York, will send three relay teams to states. In addition, three Bronco girls and one Bronco boy will compete in individual events at the track and field state meet. The Broncos were also well represented at the New York State Golf and Tennis Championships, which were held this past weekend. See the stories below.
Girls' Lacrosse
The 21-1 Broncos cruised through the regional tournament with a 17-4 victory over Section 9's Red Hook on Wednesday and a 17-2 romp over Section 2's Scotia-Glenville on Saturday. In both games, the Broncos dominated the play, scoring quickly and repeatedly. In the Red Hook game, the Broncos were up 10-0 by the end of the first half, and in the regional finals against Scotia-Glenville, they scored eight straight goals and were up 11-0 at halftime.
In the regional final against Scotia-Glenville, eight different players scored: Lilly Grass (3 goals, 3 assists), Ellie Walsh (3-1), Caroline Cahaney (2-1), Beth Finley (2-0), Mason Warble (2-0), Lucy Hanrahan (2-1), Allie Berkery (2-0), and Christina Brumbaugh (1-0). Goalie Chase Judkins had five saves for the Broncos.
The No. 3 Broncos will play No. 13 Honeoye Falls-Lima (12-8) in the state semifinal game on Friday at 9:30 am at SUNY Cortland. If the Broncos win, they will face the winner of No.1 Skaneateles/No. 2 Mt. Sinai on Saturday at 9:30 am for the state title.
Track and Field
Eleven Bronxville girls will compete at the New York State Track and Field Championships on June 12 and 13 at University of Albany. In the Section 1 state qualifier held last week, the Bronco girls dominated the relay events. The 4x800m relay (Delia Hayes, Hilary Rizzo, Laura Holland, Kaitlin Ryan) finished first, with a time of 9:18.26, and the 4x400m relay (Caroline Kirby, Kirsten Ircha, Rizzo, Holland) also placed first (4:05.03). A first-place finish automatically qualifies the team for states. The 4x100m relay (Margot Richards, Caroline DePaul, Alisa Fominykh, Sophie Kohlhoff) finished in second place, with a state-qualifying time of 50.79.
Bronxville girls also qualified for the state meet in the hurdles; Kirby will compete in the 400m hurdles and Vivian Mroz will compete in the 100m hurdles. Mroz also qualified in the pole vault and is the first Bronxville vaulter to make it to states.
Ryan qualified for states with a first-place finish in the 1500m (4:35.96). She ran a personal best 4:34.08 in early May at the Somers Invitational and is currently ranked fourth in the state.
On the boys' side, Nick Sutherland finished in first place in the 400m with a time of 51.25 and took second in the 200m with a state-qualifying time of 23:03.
Golf
Nine golfers from Section 1 competed at the New York State Championships at Cornell University this past weekend, and Bronxville juniors Connor Daly, Chris Gay, and Matt Bettino were included in that elite group. The weekend weather in Ithaca was cold and rainy throughout both rounds, making a very difficult course even more difficult, but the Bronxville boys had a strong showing. Daly finished 21st, with rounds of 78 and 76; Gay finished 22nd (77-78); and Bettino finished in the top half in a field of 99 golfers, with rounds of 82 and 79.
The season is not quite over for the golf team. The Broncos will compete tomorrow at Apawamis Country Club in Rye for the Section 1 team championship versus Fox Lane and Tappan Zee.
Tennis
The unpredictable spring weather brought rain and cold to the golf championships, but at the New York State Tennis Championships held just days earlier at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, the weather was very hot and sunny. The top-seeded Section 1 player, Jimmy Purdy, made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament before losing to Plainview's Yuval Solomon, 6-2, 6-3. Purdy, a Bronxville senior who will play at Villanova in the fall, finished fifth in the state.
Boys' Lacrosse
A committee of Section 1 coaches convened last week to select US Lacrosse High School All-Americans, and Bronxville seniors Henry Grass and Charlie Tarry were among ten Hudson Valley lacrosse players honored. Grass will play for Johns Hopkins in the fall and Tarry will play for Princeton.
