Four Sectional Titles for the Broncos in Track, Lacrosse, and Tennis; Three Golfers Qualify for States

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
May 27, 2015: The Section 1 Championships were held last week, and three Bronco teams, boys' and girls' track and field and girls' lacrosse, walked away with sectional titles. Senior Jimmy Purdy won the Section 1 tennis title and will be headed to states at the end of the week. Also heading to states are three Bronxville golfers, Connor Daly, Matt Bettino, and Chris Gay. For more information on how the teams fared, see below.
Boys' Track and Field
At the Sectional Championships held last week, the Bronxville boys' team edged out Valhalla by a score of 130.5-129. With just one event remaining, Bronxville trailed Valhalla, and the championship was to be determined by the results of the pentathlon. Bronxville's Sam Arcano and Damian Meehan finished second and third, respectively, to give the Bronco boys their sixth sectional title in seven years. Also contributing to the teams' success were seniors Guy McKhann and Steven Ircha, who both had lifetime bests, scoring a lot of points for the team. Michael Calabrese ran personal bests in both the 100m and 400m hurdle races to get third place in each, and Sean Ryan ran very impressive 800m, 1600m, and 3200m races to help the team secure the win.
"We graduated a lot of seniors last year," said Coach Nick Roosa. "For us to bounce back and win this year with only five seniors on the team was a big challenge. Valhalla is a very strong and well-rounded program and competing with them required our entire team to perform at their best. The boys really stepped up, and we had a number of athletes put up their best performances ever."
