Oct. 14, 2015: Homecoming was almost a washout for the boys' and girls' soccer teams on Friday night. With heavy rain and lightning moving through the area, for a time it seemed doubtful that the games would take place. Luckily for the Broncos, the storm moved on and the fans were treated to some great games. For photos of the Bronco Homecoming Weekend, click here: Bronco Homecoming Weekend 2015.
After an hour's rain delay, the Class B girls' soccer game against Class A Pelham got under way and the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation time. It was not until five minutes into the second overtime that freshman Rachael Peacock scored to give the Broncos a 1-0 win. The boys' soccer game against Ardsley was scoreless until just seconds before the end of the first half, when the Broncos found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. In the second half, the Bronxville boys took charge and went on to defeat Ardsley 3-1. Sam Aherne and Alston Tarry scored for the Broncos, and Aherne, Tarry and John Calabrese each had an assist. Both the girls' and boys' soccer teams are number one in Class B as the playoffs approach.
On Saturday afternoon, the Class C girls' field hockey team took on Class AA North Rockland during their homecoming contest and came away with a 4-2 victory. Senior Lilly Grass and junior Mia Bettino each scored two for the Broncos. The field hockey team is ranked 6th in the LoHud Power Rankings.
The Bronxville football team suffered a tough loss to Ardsley on Saturday night. The Broncos had a 10-7 lead late in the 4th quarter, but the Panthers scored with just four minutes left in the game and went on to win 14-10. The No. 6 Broncos will face No. 11 Valhalla in the first round of playoffs on Saturday at Chambers Field.
The girls' tennis team ended its regular season with a 7-0 homecoming win over Hastings. With a 9-0 league record, the Bronxville girls captured the league championship for the second year in a row.
The Bronxville/Tuckahoe girls' swim team defeated Eastchester 87-75 last Tuesday but fell to powerhouse Ursuline on Friday. In the swim meet against Ursuline, Alisa Fominykh had a first-place finish in the 50-yd freestyle, Lain Miller placed first in the 100-yd backstroke, and Emily Gjertsen finished first in the 100-yd breaststroke. The Bronco girls' 400-yd freestyle relay, Fominykh, Maggie O'Reilly, Caroline McGrath, and Miller, also finished first.
The cross country teams competed on their home course at the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday. The Class C girls' team finished second in its race, losing to Class A Colonie by just three points. Top finishers for Bronxville were Kaitlin Ryan (4th), Hilary Rizzo (12th), and Kirsten Ircha (19th). The girls, who were overwhelmingly the best Class C team of the day, finished 10th in the merge of 200 schools. The boys' team had a fifth-place finish in its varsity race, with Sean Ryan placing 8th out of 190 racers.
The playoffs are just around the corner, and after the homecoming victories the Broncos are looking to be very competitive in the post-season.
