Nov. 4, 2015: The Bronxville field hockey team captured the Section 1 Class C Championship on Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Pawling in double overtime. The championship game between the No. 1 Pawling Tigers and No. 2 Bronxville was a repeat of last year's matchup. The Broncos, who won the Class C championship last year, held off a very strong Pawling team to clinch their second consecutive sectional title. The game was held at Brewster High School on a near-perfect November afternoon. In the first half, the aggressive Bronxville offense challenged Pawling over and over again, but the Pawling defense held strong, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.
"We were faster than Pawling and could get the ball down to the goal, but they were a very strong defense in front of the net," said senior co-captain Lilly Grass.
After halftime, the Bronco offense took control of the game, and Mia Bettino scored off an Ellie Walsh assist within the first two minutes. The Bronxville team remained in control until late in the game when Pawling's Carley McGrath scored on a corner, tying the game 1-1 with only 3:20 left in regulation time.
The score remained tied at the end of regulation time, forcing a 7v7 sudden victory overtime. The Broncos continued to put pressure on the Pawling defense during the first overtime, but they were unable to score. In the second overtime, each team seemed more determined, and both the Broncos and the Tigers had a chance to seal the win but could not deliver. Caroline DePaul deflected a long pass off her stick from teammate Brennan O'Toole that just went wide of the goal, and Pawling's Carly McGrath also had two good shots just outside the goal.
With 3:52 left in the second overtime, DePaul got another chance to score off an assist from Grass. This time the shot found its mark, and the Broncos captured the championship for the second year in a row.
The team enjoyed the win yesterday but will be back on the practice field this afternoon to get ready for the game against Section 4's Whitney Point. The Broncos lost to Whitney Point 2-0 in the state semifinals last season. The regional game will be held at Valhalla High School on Saturday.
Go Broncos.
