Nov. 11, 2015: After losing its first game of the season to a veteran Westlake team by a touchdown, the Bronxville Broncos' Blue 5/6 Football Team tore off seven wins in a row to earn the right to face 6-2 Tuckahoe in a home playoff game this past Saturday on Chambers Field. Bronxville Blue pulled out all the stops with balloons, booth announcers (varsity football team members Jack Gelinas, Jack Reilly, and Jack Flanagan) and even the coveted Bronxville/Tuckahoe Championship Cup.
Bronxville won the toss and started the game on offense. In the first series, Peter Coquillette took an inside handoff from Danny Reilly and broke it to the outside for a 65 yard touchdown run through a gaping hole opened up by Gene Rooney and Marco Wimmershoff. After a failed extra point attempt, Bronxville's defense, led by Tommy Garafolo, Theo Veru, and Griffin Harblin, shut down Tuckahoe's first-half offense to preserve Bronxville's 6-0 lead into halftime.
After Bronxville's defense held on the initial drive of the second half, Bronxville's offense struck again with a 75 yard passing play and converted on the point after to bring the score to 13-0. Tuckahoe's offense put together a strong drive late in the fourth quarter, but Bronxville's defense made a key stop on 4th and 1 to seal the victory, the shutout, and the Bronxville/Tuckahoe Championship Cup.
The fifth- and sixth-grade program was developed about eight years ago to introduce 11- and 12-year-olds to the game of football. This year's team has a healthy roster of 22 players: Thomas Conneally, Peter Coquillette, Teddy Dolan, Patrick Doyle, Tommy Garafolo, Patrick Greatrex, Griffin Harblin, Nick Hommeyer, Roland Kapland, Bo MacNaughton, Peter McGinley, Hunter Morris, Oliver Nordahl, Graden OKeefe, Eamon O'Reilly, Danny Reilly, Gene Rooney, Chris Scotti, Drew Sondey, James Sondey, Theo Veru, and Marco Wimmershoff. The coaching staff is made up of dedicated parents Gene Rooney, Dave Reilly, Ed Sondey, Rob MacNaughton, and Mike Hommeyer.
Next weekend, Bronxville Blue gets a chance to avenge its only loss against Westlake in the Westchester Youth Football League (WYFL) championship game.
Go Blue.
