Nov. 2, 2015: This past Thursday, the No. 2 Bronxville field hockey team went up against No. 3 Croton in the Class C sectional semifinals. It was a very even matchup between the 14-3-1 Broncos and the 13-3-1 Tigers, but the Broncos came through with a 3-1 win.
The Bronxville team started off flat, and Croton took advantage of the Broncos' slow start by being the first to score. It took some time, but with 2:38 left in the first half, Lilly Grass scored for the Broncos to tie the game.
In the second half of the game against Croton, the roles were reversed, and Bronxville was able to dominate possession of the ball. With 12:53 left in the game, Mia Bettino, with an assist from Grass, scored to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. The third unanswered Bronco goal came from Grass with an assist from Caroline DePaul with under five minutes left on the clock.
The Broncos, the defending Section 1 Class C champs, will be meeting Pawling in the sectional finals for the second year in a row.
"We are very excited to be back in the sectional finals this year," said Coach Jacquelyn Deppe. "We beat Pawling last year and will be going for back-to-back titles."
Deppe noted that the team has many key players who have contributed in the post-season.
"Our leading scorer is senior captain Lilly Grass," said Coach Deppe. "Junior center midfielder Ellie Walsh is a star in transitions up and down the field, and senior captain Brennan O'Toole and sophomore Claire Kraemer are helping keep the defense strong."
No. 1 Pawling, who defeated North Salem in the sectional semifinals, will play the Broncos on Tuesday at 3:00 pm at Brewster High School, a neutral field for both teams.
Go Broncos.
