Oct. 8, 2014: The girls' soccer team has won the Class B Sectional Championship for the past four years, and this year's team looks to have what it takes to reel in another title.
The undefeated Broncos have won eleven games so far this fall, including a dramatic 3-1 overtime win over rival Briarcliff on September 29. Bronxville and Briarcliff have traded off as the sectional champs for the last eight years, with each team winning four sectional titles. It is one of the most competitive rivalries in Section 1.
In last week's game, the two powerhouse teams battled back and forth, and at the end of regulation, the score was tied 1-1. The game went into overtime, with Caitlin Fryer and Lucy Kohlhoff each scoring to give the Broncos a 3-1 win.
"We went into the game knowing it was going to be the hardest one of our season so far," said senior Lucy Kohlhoff. "In double overtime, the game came down to who wanted it more. Every single one of our players left everything they had out on the field, and that's why we won."
The Broncos will play a very good Irvington team this Thursday. Bronxville has knocked Irvington out of the playoffs for the last two years, so it should be an interesting game. The homecoming game will be on Friday at 7:15 pm against Class AA Ossining.
"Our homecoming game versus Ossining should be a tough one," said Coach Don Cupertino. "They only have two losses and are a very physical team." It should be an interesting game for Cupertino; he coached Ossining's coach, Stephanie Levelle, when she played for the Patriots during her high school years.
Boys' Soccer
The boys' soccer team is 7-2-2 and will face Ardsley (2-9) on Friday night at 5:15 pm. Three Class B Section 1 teams are state-ranked, including Irvington (4th), Edgemont (13th), and Bronxville (14th). The Broncos will not face Irvington during the regular season but have faced Edgemont twice. In their first meeting in early September, Edgemont defeated the Broncos 3-0, but in a rematch last week, the boys' team handed the Panthers a 2-1 loss. In that game, James Burnell had a goal with an assist from Sam Aherne, and Aherne went on to score the winning goal.
Boys' Cross Country
Last weekend the boys' cross country team ran at Six Flags in the Safari Park and took the rest of the day off to explore the amusement park. Sean Ryan, Joe Dougherty, Harry Vollmer, Hiroshi Kawakatsu, and Alex Rizzo have all had strong performances this season. Sean Ryan recently won the Regis Invitational at Van Cortland Park in 13:59 beating the second-place finisher from St. John the Baptist High School by 20 seconds. The boys' team will compete at the Manhattan College Invitational on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.
Girls' Cross Country
This week the girls' varsity team finished the dual meet portion of its season with a record of 10-0. Over homecoming weekend, the girls' team will also participate in the Manhattan College Invitational, which is the largest one-day cross country meet in the world with more than 11,000 runners competing. Kaitlin Ryan is leading the varsity, followed closely by Delia Hayes, Carlie Hoffer, Olivia Scotti, Hilary Rizzo, and Lindsay Nobles. The freshman team is very strong and is led by Caroline Kirby, Gigi Chrappa, Emma Mandanas, Marguerite Scotti, Bella Dibbini, Bela Lamadrid, and Kirsten Ircha.
Field Hockey
The field hockey team has lost just one game so far this season and sits at number one in Class C. The homecoming game will be on Saturday afternoon against Briarcliff (2-5-3) at 3:00 pm.
Girls' Tennis
Girls' varsity tennis team is 6-1 this season, and several players should be headed to post-season play. The homecoming match against Hastings on Wednesday will be the final match of the regular season before the start of the sectional tournament.
Girls' Swimming and Diving
The girls' swim team will go up against Harrison this Friday at 4:30 pm at Sarah Lawrence College. The team's record is 2-2 so far this season. There have already been four swimmers who have had sectional qualifying times for swimming or diving; sisters Vivian and Izzy Mroz have qualified in diving, and Nicole Veru and Alisa Fominykh have qualified for swimming. Junior Maggie O'Reilly has been strong in the 100m fly, and sophomore Zoe Hutchings has done well for the team in the 200m and 500m freestyle. The younger swimmers have really been stepping up and scoring points this season. Seventh grader Eileen Marshall has been able to score points in the 500m freestyle along with eighth graders Anneke Pulkkinen in the 50m freestyle and Nina Veru in the 200m and 500m freestyle.
