Unbeaten Bronxville Football Team Takes on Woodlands
Written by Tracy Tarry
Oct. 8, 2014: At the beginning of the football season, Bronxville was picked to finish fourth in the section behind Rye Neck, Dobbs Ferry, and Class D Tuckahoe. Five games later, the Broncos are unbeaten, with wins over all three of the teams that were expected to finish ahead of them. After beating Rye Neck convincingly, the Broncos began drawing media attention and are currently ranked fourth in Class C by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
The team's success comes as no surprise to Bronco JV coach Dan Martin, who remembers coaching them as freshman when they went undefeated. The Broncos' line, which has drawn comparisons to that of Bronxville's 2010 State Championship team, is anchored by senior captains Luke Geiling and Preston Klimley and Steven Ircha, Ted Meyers, and Zach Shively. Over the first five games, the Bronco defense had a record number of sacks and tackles and held the opposition scoring to just over nine points per game.
On offense, the Broncos run and throw the ball effectively. Through the first five games, running back Brendan Carty exploded for nearly 600 yards, with Robby Westerfield also running the ball well and serving as Carty's lead blocker. Quarterback Graham Klimley is not afraid to put the ball in the air, with two favorite targets being Brendan Walsh and Charlie Tarry. Klimley has thrown for a league-leading eleven touchdowns on the season, eight of them to Tarry, the leader in receiving touchdowns. On defense and special teams, the Broncos get great energy and kicking from junior Sam Connors.
For its homecoming game this Saturday at 6:00 pm, the Broncos face Woodlands, a fast and athletic team with size. When asked about the game, Bronco coach Jeff Napolitano said, "Woodlands is a solid football team that has gone to the final two years in a row. We are looking to end that streak." Woodlands, whose record stands at 2-2, will be playing to keep its play-off hopes alive, so expect a competitive game.
