Feb. 4, 2015: The Bronxville varsity fall teams fared well in 2014, winning league and sectional titles. The teams also had success at the state level, with the girls' soccer team winning the Class B state title, the girls' field hockey team making the Class C state semifinals, and the girls' cross country team finishing as the Class C state runner-up.
In the post-season, Bronxville fall athletes were honored with some notable awards, including the "Golden Dozen" football award and All-State recognition.
Last Thursday, the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation held its 42nd annual Golden Dozen Awards Banquet, where they recognized twelve football players for academic, athletic, and extracurricular accomplishments. Two Bronxville seniors, Steven Ircha and Charlie Tarry, were honored with this prestigious award.
"It's really a huge honor winning this award," said Tarry, "especially considering the history of it. Looking at past winners, it's a really impressive group of kids both from Bronxville and otherwise that have won the award, so it's an honor to be included in that group. I'm really thankful to Coach Napolitano for nominating and supporting both myself and Steven."
The award has been given to Westchester football players since 1973, and in that time, many Bronxville players have been the recipients. In the past five years, five Bronxville players have won the award, and six have received honorable mention.
"I think it speaks well for both the community and football program at Bronxville that such a small town is so well represented at this event," said Tarry.
For a small school, Bronxville has also had an extraordinary number of athletes rewarded for their efforts with All-State recognition. The varsity girls' cross country team had four members recognized at the state level. Senior Delia Hayes was named to the All-State first team, sophomore Kaitlin Ryan to the second team, and Olivia Scotti to the fourth team, and Hilary Rizzo received honorable mention. For the boys' cross country team, junior Sean Ryan was named to the All-State fourth team.
The soccer, field hockey, and football teams had eight athletes receive All-State recognition. For the girls' soccer team, first-team All-State honors went to Caitlin Fryer, who was named Class B Player of the Year. Senior Charlie Warble was also named to the first team, and senior Lucy Kohlhoff received second-team All-State recognition. The girls' soccer coach, Don Cupertino, was named New York State Class B Coach of the Year.
Other recipients of All-State honors include senior Charlotte Reynolds, midfielder for the field hockey team, and junior Sam Aherne, a forward on the boys' soccer team.
Two defensive linemen on the Bronco football team were named to the Class C state team. Steven Ircha was All-State, first team, and senior Luke Geiling was All-State, third team. Junior Sam Connors was given honorable mention as placekicker.
Go Broncos.
