Feb. 11, 2015: The sectional playoffs for the Bronxville boys' varsity basketball team will begin this Thursday at 4:30 pm at Pleasantville High School. The ninth-seeded Broncos, with an 11-7 record, will face off against a very good, guard-oriented Pleasantville team (12-6). Having scrimmaged Pleasantville just before the season, the Broncos know what to expect. Pleasantville is led by senior All-Section point guard Chris Maloney and, as a team, shoots the ball extremely well from outside.
With eight seniors on the squad, the Broncos bring experience. Captain Charlie Tarry leads the team in scoring, averaging 16 points and 6 rebounds per game, including 5 games scoring more than 20 points despite being the primary focus of the opponents' defense. Point guard Matt Toal averages 10 points and 4 assists per game and leads the team in three-point shooting percentage. The remaining starters are Captain Michael Crawford, who generally draws the assignment of guarding the best scorer on the opposing team, shooter Tyler Schultz, and in the low post, Matt Huncke. Brendan Carty, who is known for drawing charges, provides additional energy and defense.
With key victories this season over Haldane (14-4) and Sleepy Hollow (12-6), the Broncos are looking for a win on Thursday afternoon. According to head coach Brian Senior, "Pleasantville will be a tough environment to play in, as the home team will pack the gym, and the crowd will try to be a factor. We would LOVE to have the support of our student body as we start our playoff run."
The girls' basketball team (8-8), seeded tenth in Class B, will face seventh-seeded Yonkers Montessori away on Thursday afternoon in the first round. The Broncos defeated Yonkers Montessori 33-25 in late January.
If the teams are successful in the first round, they will play in the quarterfinals on February 18 at the higher seed.
Go Broncos.
