By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Apr. 22, 2015: The Bronco teams are off to a great start and are well positioned for the upcoming playoff season. The Bronco turf teams have played well, with only one loss for the girls' lacrosse team and baseball team and two losses for boys' lacrosse. The girls' track and field had a strong showing at the New York Relays, which were held at Randall's Island last weekend. Kaitlin Ryan placed first in the 800m, and the 4x800m relay placed second. For more results on the Bronco teams, see below.
Girls' Lacrosse
The Bronxville girls' lacrosse team seems to be unstoppable this season. In the last two weeks, the girls have outscored their opponents 90-20, defeating Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Valhalla, Pleasantville, and Putnam Valley. Earlier in the season, the Class C Broncos defeated Class A teams Fox Lane and Scarsdale, and they also handed a defeat to Long Island's Oyster Bay. The 7-1 Broncos have lost only to North Shore, but the competition should heat up when the team plays Mamaroneck and Rye in early May.
Lilly Grass and Ellie Walsh are leading the team in points scored, and Mason Warble and Beth Finley are leading the team in draw controls. There are seven players with over 20 points so far this season, which really shows just how much depth the Broncos have. The girls are ranked first in Class C by the Journal News and just moved to the number 10 spot in the Section 1 power rankings for schools of all sizes.
The next home game is on Saturday against Ursuline at 4:00 pm on Chambers Field. The Broncos will hold a fundraiser for the One Love Foundation on Tuesday, April 28, during the game against Irvington.
Boys' Baseball
Last week, the 5-1 Broncos took back-to-back wins over Irvington 9-1 and 14-2. In the second game, Matt Huncke's three-run homer gave him the distinction of being the first Bronco to hit it out of the new baseball park. In the two games combined, Huncke had five hits and four RBIs, Jack Redpath had four hits and five RBIs, Tyler Schultz had four hits and three RBIs, and Jack Braumuller had four hits and two RBIs. Winning pitchers in the games against Irvington were Joe Pepe and Jack Braumuller. The team will play Croton today at home at 4:30 pm.
Girls' Track and Field
The girls' track and field team participated in two big meets last week. At the New York Relays held at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island, the 4x800 Bronxville relay (Laura Holland, Caroline Kirby, Delia Hayes, and Hilary Rizzo) placed second behind Ursuline with a time of 9:27.91. At the Fulton Invitational held at Harrison High School, the Bronco girls' team competed against Harrison, White Plains, Scarsdale, New Rochelle, and Somers. Steven Ircha finished in second place in the high jump and 100m hurdles and Sutherland finished second in the 200m dash.
Golf
Golf opened the season against Mamaroneck with a 203-222 victory and then later in the week had victories over both Edgemont and Solomon Schechter. In the season opener against Mamaroneck at Bonnie Briar Country Club, Connor Daly had a tremendous opening day, shooting an even-par 35. The Broncos took the top four spots with Daly in first, Matt Bettino finishing second with a 39, Chris Gay at third with a 42, and John Yienger at fourth with a 43. Jared Hendrick tied for fifth with three Mamaroneck golfers.
Boys' Lacrosse
The boys' lacrosse team suffered a tough 10-8 loss to Pleasantville last week but then rallied to defeat Iona Prep and Greenwich. In the games against Pleasantville, Iona Prep, and Greenwich, top scorers included Henry Grass, Ara Atayan, and Ted Forst. Face-off specialist Liam Lynch led the fielding and sophomore James Swartz had an average of 12 saves per game.
Bronxville is ranked number two in the Lohud Power rankings; Pleasantville is ranked number three, and Iona Prep is ranked number seven. Bronxville defeated Pleasantville in the Class C final last year, and it is shaping up to be a rematch this year. The Bronco boys held a fundraiser for St. Jude's during the game against Greenwich on Saturday as part of Bronco Spirit Week.
Boys' Tennis
The boys' tennis team is undefeated so far this season with a 4-2 over Horace Mann, a 6-0 win over Pleasantville, and a 4-2 defeat of Hackley. Jimmy Purdy plays first singles, Ferdinand Schumck plays second singles, and Robby Simon plays third. The team will meet up with Nyack and Sleepy Hollow this week.
