May 13, 2015: The girls' lacrosse team (15-1) has been outstanding this entire season, playing games in its league but also competing in out-of-league games against top-ranked teams. The Class C Broncos were tested early in the season with back-to-back games against Long Island teams and came up with a win against Oyster Bay but suffered their only loss of the season to North Shore, a Class B team that is ranked tenth in the state. The girls' team fared well against top teams in Section 1 with wins over highly ranked Class A Mamaroneck and Class B Byram Hills.
The Broncos' biggest challenge of the season, however, came on Saturday night in an away game against powerhouse Rye. The team has faced Rye many times in the past but has never come away with a win.
"We were expecting them to be tough," said co-captain Charlotte Reynolds. "We had similar records, and we both won against the same teams. We came out thinking we have to play our game if we want to win."
The game started off slowly for the Broncos, who could not find their momentum and found themselves down 5-2 at the half.
When Coach Sharon Robinson met with the girls at halftime, she reminded them that a three-goal lead was nothing, and she encouraged the team to keep up the intensity. The Broncos regrouped and in the second half outscored the Garnets 9-3 to secure an 11-8 victory.
"We don't really get nervous," said Reynolds. "We are all very confident. It is not a one-man show, and we have all stepped up."
Many Broncos have stepped up this season, and the team's strength comes from the depth of talent on the roster. In the game against Rye, six different Broncos scored: Lilly Grass, Ellie Walsh, Allie Berkery, Charlotte Reynolds, Mason Warble, and Caroline Cahaney. The Broncos' ability to spread out the scoring has been the norm this season.
"The scoring really starts from the defense when they pass it down the field," said Reynolds. The Bronco defenders, Briana Alberghine, Lain Miller, Fallon Raviol, and Taylor Sears, along with goalie Chase Judkins, have done an outstanding job.
Playoffs will begin this week. Bronxville, the defending Class C champion, received the No. 1 seed and will play in the first round of playoffs at home on Thursday at 5:30 pm against the winner of the Pleasantville/Irvington out bracket game. The Class C quarterfinals will take place at the higher seed on Saturday, and the semifinals will take place at the higher seed on Tuesday. The Section 1 championship game will be held next Thursday, May 21, at Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Go Broncos.
