This week marks winter break for the Bronxville School, but many of its winter athletes are still hard at work preparing for end-of-season playoffs. On Sunday, the track and field teams competed in the Sectional Championships, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams winning their respective Class C titles. Meanwhile, the Bronxville basketball teams wrapped up their regular season earlier this week and are set to begin playoffs on Friday. The girls’ team, ranked No. 4, will host No. 13 Byram Hills, while the No. 10 boys’ team will travel to face No. 7 Albertus Magnus.
Basketball
The girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with a 17-3 record and enters Class A Section 1 tournament as a high seed. In the last week of the regular season, the Broncos had a 51-37 loss to Class AAA New Rochelle and wins over North Salem (53-27) and Irvington (44-32).
In the game against Irvington, Claire Kennedy was the top scorer with 16 points, and Kalliroi Ladas scored 10. Sophomore Ellie Fahy had a strong finish to the season scoring double digits for the Broncos in the final three games. She is one of four Section 1 players in LoHud’s Player of the Week poll this week. To cast a vote for Kalliroi, visit Lohud.com and vote before 3PM today.
The magic number for the boys’ team seems to be ten. The Broncos finished the regular season with a 10-10 record and are the No. 10 seed in Class A. In the first round of playoffs, they will face No. 7 Albertus Magnus, whose record also happens to be 10-10.
In the last week of the regular season the Broncos defeated Hastings 51-39 with Jack Kennedy scoring 24 points. They also played two close games against Irvington. The Broncos trailed the Bulldogs 59-58 in the first game but secured the win with 10 seconds left on a three-point shot from Tommy Ruhanen. In Broncos’ second game against Irvington, the Bulldogs defeated the Broncos 50-49 with Ruhanen scoring 15 points and Walker Moore contributing 13.
Indoor Track and Field
The indoor track and field teams excelled in the Class C Sectional Championships, which were held at the Armory on Sunday. The girls’ team placed either 1st or 2nd in 12 out of 13 events, and the boys’ team finished in 1st or 2nd in nine of 13 events.
In the Class C Championship, Alessa Johnson placed first in both the high jump and the triple jump, while Juliet Winiecki took home individual gold medals in the 55m hurdles and the long jump.
Winiecki was also part of the first-place 4x400m relay team along with Kara Kochansky, Beatrice Hogue, and Ella McCalla. The Bronxville girls, who are always very successful in the relays, also won the 4x200m relay (Carson Kochansky, Drake Benton, Maria Overby, and Elena Tomala-Reidel) and the 4x800m relay (Finlay Rowan, Jessica O’Gorman, Emerson Dennis, and Quinn Sheehan).
The boys’ team exceled in middle and long distance. Finishing first for the Broncos were Kieran McBride in the 3200m, Julian Gonzalez in the 1000m, and Davis Patterson in the 600m.
The 4x400m relay team, Ted Valdes, Julian Gonzalez, John Sekula, Kieran McBride, helped push the boys’ team to their fourth Sectional Championship in four years.
