Sep. 23, 2015: The Bronxville girls' tennis team is off to a strong start with a 5-1 record so far this season. The Broncos' only loss came in the first match of the season to Scarsdale, a non-league opponent. Scarsdale won 4-3 in a nail-biter that came down to a third-set tiebreaker at first doubles.
"Scarsdale is always a top team," said Coach Ted Garber, "so I think it was a good showing."
Since the loss to Scarsdale, Bronxville has won five straight league matches, including a 7-0 victory over Hastings yesterday. The Broncos faced their toughest league competition last week, defeating Keio 4-2 and Edgemont 4-3, and will face both teams again before the end of the season. The girls' tennis team was undefeated in league play last year, so it has now won eleven consecutive league matches.
This year's team is made up of nine returning varsity players and seven newcomers. "The team has a lot of good depth," said Garber, "and I think we have a team that could be stronger top to bottom than last year's team."
Top singles player and state qualifier Chrissy Simon graduated, but junior Christina Brumbaugh will look to take over the first singles spot. She will be playing a lot of the top players in the area, and she continues to improve each week. "I think she has the ability to shock some people by the end of the year," said Garber.
Second and third singles will once again be senior captain Caroline Schetlick and junior Lucy Hanrahan. They both had good seasons in 2014 and continue to improve. The team is expecting big things from them again this year.
The doubles teams could end up being the strength of the Broncos this fall. Returners Juliet Timmins (senior and captain) and Lindsey Cruikshank (freshman) will play first doubles, and returner eighth-grader Eva Dani and newcomer Katharine Forst, just a seventh-grader, will play second doubles. Both teams have looked strong and could contend for a spot in sectionals.
The rest of the lineup comprises newcomers Olivia Jensen (junior), Eliza McFadden (freshman), Maryasa Krivitskaya (junior), and returners Dryden Quigley (senior) and Alexandra Brumbaugh (freshman).
The Broncos are the favorites to repeat as league champions this year.
Go Broncos.
