Boys’ Tennis and Golf Remain Undefeated: See Updates for All Bronco Sports

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Apr. 27, 2016: A little more than two weeks are left in the regular season before the Bronco varsity teams head to playoffs. Two teams, boys' tennis and boys' golf, are undefeated and looking to capture league and conference titles. The girls' lacrosse team, ranked eighth in the state for schools of all sizes, has lost only one game and had a big 15-5 win over Rye yesterday. The boys' lacrosse team suffered two heartbreaking losses in overtime this week and is looking for a win today against Irvington. The track and field teams competed at the Mount Saint Michael Relays this past weekend, and the 4x800 girls' relay placed first with a time of 9:25.59, the third fastest time in the state this spring. New this year to varsity sports are mountain biking and girls' golf. See below for details.
Girls' Lacrosse
The Broncos continued their winning streak yesterday with a crushing win over Rye. Beth Finley, Mason Warble, and Lilly Grass each had three goals. The team has plenty of scoring power with a total of seven different girls scoring in the win over Rye.
In fact, the Broncos have outscored their opponents by 146-56 so far this season. The girls have seven games left in the regular season and will face a tough schedule in the remaining weeks. The team made it to the state semifinals last year and is hoping to go far into the playoffs again this year. On the schedule is Class A Scarsdale, ranked sixth in the state, Class B Somers (No. 10), and Class B Yorktown (No. 13).

Boys' Lacrosse
It was a challenging week for Bronxville boys' lacrosse. The team lost 13-12 to Westlake in sudden-death overtime on Friday, and in a defensive battle against a strong Briarcliff team, Bronxville lost 4-3 in triple overtime on Monday. The team, 5-6 so far this season, has been hampered by a string of injuries. Bronxville has lost to Class A Syosset and Class B Yorktown, but even Class C in Section 1 has some of the toughest competition in the state. The Broncos, currently ranked 17th, have lost to No. 5 Pleasantville and No. 9 Briarcliff.
Track and Field
The Broncos boys' and girls' track and field teams competed at the Mount Saint Michael Relays on Saturday. The Broncos girls 4x800m relay had a first-place finish and Kaitlin Ryan's 2:09.0 anchor leg was the fastest time in the state so far this season. The Broncos will send three teams to the Penn Relays tomorrow: the 4x800 (Hilary Rizzo, Olivia Scotti, Laura Holland, Kaitlin Ryan), the 4x100 (Margot Richards, Caroline DePaul, Alisa Fominykh, Sophie Kohlhoff) and the 4x400 (Kirsten Ircha, Caroline Brashear, Laura Holland, Kaitlin Ryan).

Mountain Biking
The Bronxville High School coed mountain biking team is enjoying a great season. The first race of the year was snowed out, but in the latest race, sophomore Tyler Stupart pedaled his way through a huge crowd to earn a first-place finish, and Jack Harwood followed shortly behind in third. Freshman Michael Murray also scored a third-place finish, despite losing his shoe a quarter mile from the finish. Eli Sills had a tremendous race in the varsity category and finished a strong fourth place. Freshman Sophie Geer earned a sixth-place finish in her mountain biking debut. The team has been practicing at nearby Sprain Ridge and Graham Hills Parks and is looking forward to a strong showing at the Thatcher Park Fossil cross-country race this coming weekend.
Tennis
The boys' tennis team was undefeated last year and continues its winning streak this season with six consecutive victories. In the match last week against Solomon Schechter, Bronxville won all five matches and gave up only one game. Robbie Simon plays first singles for the Broncos, and Julian McCarthy and Liam Krall play second and third, respectively. Playing first doubles for Bronxville are Roy Gosnell and Hiro Kawakatsu.

Baseball
The Bronco baseball team (4-7) had back-to-back wins this week. In Saturday's 13-2 win against YMA, Joe Pepe threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts and no walks, and he gave up only one hit. Pepe also lead the offense going 4 for 5. The Broncos came back on Monday to defeat Early College (formerly Roosevelt) 14-5 in an away game at Fleming Field. Tim Weir pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. Joe Pepe had three hits, and senior John Seminara had a homerun and 4 RBIs. The Broncos will face Ardsley today at home at 4:30 pm.
Boys' Golf
The undefeated boys' golf team went up against undefeated Rye on Monday, winning by a score of 191 to 194. Bronxville's Matt Bettino and James McHugh from Rye tied for first with a score of 36, and Connor Daly and Chris Gay tied for third (37). Liam Bishop (39) and Will Tormey (42) rounded out the scoring for the Broncos. Seniors Daly, Gay, and Bettino qualified for states last year and have helped lead the team to a 7-0 record so far this season.
Girls' Golf
The girls' golf team (1-3) is a new varsity sport this year. There are seven golfers who are led by top golfer and senior captain Sarah Torres. Torres and senior Grace Leemputte were part of the coed golf team last year and return this season as the two veterans. Also on the team are juniors Maddie Coyne and Georgia Lazaroni, sophomore Nanda Fraser, and eighth-graders Pippa Fraser and Olivia Martin.
