By Tracy Tarry
Dec. 14, 2016: On Thursday, December 1, the Bronxville boys' varsity basketball team opened its season with the Carolyn Conroy Memorial Tournament at Lakeland High School. After falling 57-47 in the opening round to Class AA Horace Greeley (the eventual tournament winner), the Broncos beat Putnam Valley in the second game by a score of 46-30.
Senior Jack Reilly was named to the All-tournament team. Leading the Broncos in scoring over the two days were Alston Tarry with 34, Reilly with 17, and Matt Toal and Brian DePaul with 14 apiece. Other veteran players include Jerry Frost, Jack Flanagan, Eddy Connors, and Billy Ramundo. New to the varsity squad are Liam Bishop, Tim McGrath, and Ashton Smith.
The Broncos open at home today at 4:30 pm against non-league opponent Biondi High School, formerly Leake and Watts. Following that, they host the annual Bill Green Holiday Tournament on December 16 and 17. The two-day tournament is a warm-up for the basketball season and is named for former Bronxville athletic director Bill Green. Green, a World War II veteran, coached varsity basketball and golf and was an assistant football coach at Bronxville High School for many years.
