Bronco Update: Bronxville Boys' Lacrosse Team Gets Redemption with a Win over Pleasantville; Track and Field Wins Fulton Invitational

Apr. 26, 2017: The boys' lacrosse team racked up another two wins last week to bring the team to 7-1 this season, and both the boys' and the girls' track and field teams performed impressively at the Fulton Invitational, with the boys winning the meet and the girls having seven first-place finishes.
Boys' Lacrosse
The date of the Bronxville-Pleasantville lacrosse game was marked on Bronxville's calendar from the beginning of the season. This year's seniors lost to Pleasantville four times in the last two years, including a 4-3 double-overtime loss last year in the Class C sectional final. This year, Bronxville moved down to Class D when a new class was added in boys' lacrosse, and, as a result, the Broncos' only meeting with Pleasantville was this regular season game. On Thursday, the Broncos got the convincing win they wanted, defeating Pleasantville 12-6 on Chambers Field. The win was Coach Tim Horgan's 150th.
Bronxville dominated the game from the face-off "X" to the net, with senior Jerry Frost winning 11 of 21 face-offs, which was critical for the Broncos. Goalkeeper James Swartz set the tone for the game early in the first period, rejecting an open shot at close range from Pleasantville's Brian Reda, who was held to one goal on the day by the Bronxville defense. Swartz, a senior captain, was a standout, making 16 saves during the game.
The game was close initially, but Bronxville took the lead after a 2-2 tie and then never looked back. Junior Ryan Alberghine stunned Pleasantville by scoring four goals in the first half, and junior Alston Tarry scored four in the second. George Daskalakis added two more, and Mac Crawford and Jerry Frost tallied one apiece.

On Saturday, the Broncos traveled to Briarcliff to face another pesky opponent. Bronxville scored early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead, and appeared to be en route to a comfortable victory. However, Briarcliff battled back, ultimately tying the game by utilizing a zone defense that slowed Bronxville down. Bronxville thought it had scored the winning goal in the final seconds of regulation, but the goal was waived off, sending the 6-6 game into overtime. Ryan Alberghine scored the game winner during the "sudden victory" period on an assist from Alston Tarry. Tarry finished with three goals, and Ara Atayan, Jerry Frost, and George Daskalakis each had one.
The Broncos are now 7-1 for the season, with their only loss coming in Maryland to nationally ranked St. Paul's. This Friday, they host Blind Brook at 4:30 pm in a "Fan Day" game and fundraiser in support of Autism Awareness. Festivities will include a bake sale, complimentary "tattoos" and "Bronco Beads," player autographs, and a halftime exhibition game featuring a Bronxville Youth Lacrosse Association team. On Saturday morning, the Broncos travel to New Jersey to take on regional powerhouse Bridgewater-Raritan at 10:00 am.
Boys' Track and Field
At the Fulton Invitational held at Harrison High School on April 18, the Bronxville boys won the meet, defeating Harrison, White Plains, Scarsdale, and New Rochelle. The Broncos were bolstered by Alex Rizzo's winning the 1600m, but field events added the bulk of the points for the Bronco win. Billy Ramundo (high jump), Scott McGrath (long jump), Luke Redman (pole vault), and Avery Kane (shot put) all took first place in their respective events.
At the New York Relays held on April 22 at Icahn Stadium, the boys held their own against some stiff competition. The event featured 125 teams, mostly from New York, and the Broncos had some impressive finishes. Alex Rizzo placed 5th in the mile, and in the high jump, Ramundo placed 10th (5-4) and Damian Meehan 13th (5-0). In the shot put, Avery Kane placed 5th (42-7) and Tripp Judkins placed (12th) (32-8).
Girls' Track and Field
The Bronxville girls had seven first-place finishes at the Fulton Invitational: Sabrina Mellinghoff (200m), Kaitlin Ryan (400m), Patty Haggerty (1500m), Avery Widen (3000m), Caroline Kirby (400m hurdles), the 4x400m relay (Eve Balseiro, Caroline Brashear, Laura Holland, and Kaitlin Ryan), and the 4x800m relay (Sydney Coddington, Olivia Scotti, Avery Widen, and Gigi Chrappa). The winner of the Invitational was decided on the last event, the 4x400m relay. Kaitlin Ryan's anchor leg of 58.8 was just enough to give a 126-124 win over New Rochelle.
At the New York Relays, Ryan carried her success from the winter into the spring, winning the 800m in 2:11.65. The girls' 4x400m (Balseiro, Brashear, Holland, Ryan) placed 3rd in 3:59.33, and the 4x800m (Coddington, Haggerty, Brashear, Holland) placed 5th in 9:52.50.
