May 10, 2017: Bronxville came up with a big 12-10 victory over Mamaroneck on Saturday afternoon at Chambers Field. The Broncos had a solid 6-1 lead at the end of the first half, but the second half of the game was a different story. With a 10-4 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, it seemed as if Bronxville might cruise to an easy victory, but the Tigers made the Broncos work for the win by scoring six in the final ten minutes of the game.
Ara Atayan contributed to the win with five goals, Alston Tarry had three goals and five assists, and James Swartz had fourteen saves. Gerry Frost went 13-19 from the face-off X, which helped control possessions.
"Beating Mamaroneck was a great win for our team, and we were all super excited," noted Atayan. "A lot of guys are stepping up big during games and in practice, which is huge since we have a smaller roster compared to many teams we play."
It was a big day for UNC-bound Atayan, who scored his 200th career point in Saturday's game.
"As far as scoring 200 points--it's a cool accomplishment," said Atayan. "To be able to set it against Mamaroneck, who we've been playing against since probably the third grade, was awesome. But I'd give every point back so our team could be playing in Rochester in the state championship in June."
The Broncos seem to be on a steady march toward the state championship. On Monday, they faced another tough Section 1 opponent, Class B Somers. The Broncos won the home game in overtime (8-7) with Atayan scoring the winning goal and improving Bronxville's record to 12-2.
The Class D Broncos are ranked No. 5 in the LoHud Power Rankings and have had impressive wins over several top-ranked teams, including No. 3 Pleasantville, No. 7 Iona Prep, and No. 8 Mamaroneck. They are currently the favorite in the state for Class D schools.
The team finishes the regular season on Saturday with a game at Lakeland/Panas. The Panthers, a Class A school, are ranked one slot above Bronxville in the LoHud Power Rankings.
