May 24, 2017:  Now that the regular season has come to a close, the Bronco teams have moved right into playoffs. The girls' lacrosse team will vie for the Class D Sectional Championship today, and the boys' lacrosse team will play in the sectional finals tomorrow. Bronxville varsity golf and tennis players are also competing this week in sectionals, hoping to qualify for the state championships. The track and field teams will compete in the Class C Section 1 Championship on Friday at Valhalla High School. See below for team updates.   

Golf

The 60 best golfers in Section 1 competed in the first round of sectionals on Monday at Waccabuc Country Club, and that included Bronxville juniors Liam Bishop and Daniel Bettino and freshmen Conor Stoltz and Will Tormey. Bishop finished on top for the Broncos with an 80, followed by Bettino and Stoltz with an 82 and Tormey with an 87. Bishop, Bettino, and Stoltz advanced to the round of 30, which will be held at Fenway Country Club today.

Tennis

Robby Simon has been a fixture on the Bronxville varsity tennis roster for the last six years. He started playing third singles as a seventh-grader, and for the past two years he has led the team in the first singles position. At conferences held last week, Simon, the No. 3 seed, defeated Adam Dietz of Hastings in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0, but lost in the semifinals in a third-set tiebreaker to Keio's Ryo Sakai (2-6, 6-3, 10-7).

Junior Julian McCarthy and freshman Liam Krall, the No. 2 seeded doubles team at the conference tournament, won the whole thing by defeating the No. 1 team from Edgemont in a third-set tiebreak (4-6, 6-3, 10-7). Freshmen Charlie Nordahl and Jimmy Hennessy took 5th place.

Simon and both doubles teams will compete at the sectional tournament this week at Harrison High School.

Mountain Biking

The Bronxville mountain biking team has had two races in the last two weeks. In a race on May 7 at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island, NY, the Broncos had solid results. In the freshman girls' division, Sofia Fenner placed 3rd, Alana McGinness placed 4th, and Victoria Vigorito placed 5th; in the sophomore girls' division, Katherine Moynihan placed 3rd. In the boys' sophomore division, Michael Murray placed 3rd and Ashton Smith placed 4th; Jack Harwood placed 5th in the boys' JV division.

The Broncos raced this past Sunday at Walnut Mountain Park in Liberty, New York. In the freshman race, Sofia Fenner, Victoria Vigorito, and Sarah Whitney placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively, and in the sophomore race, Sophie Geer and Katherine Moynihan placed 2nd and 4th, respectively.

The Bronxville team, coached by Ben Cornish, is currently in 5th place among roughly 25 teams. They have participated in four races this season and will compete in the NICA Championship Race on June 4 at Thacher State Park in Voorheesville, NY.

Track and Field

The Broncos captured two county titles at the Westchester County Track and Field Championships held last weekend. Kaitlin Ryan won the 800m in 2:09.09, the second fastest time in New York State this season. Sabrina Mellinghoff placed 3rd in the 200m in a time of 25.52, the number-one state time for a freshman girl this spring.

The Bronxville relay teams also fared well. The 4x800m relay team, Ryan, Laura Holland, Caroline Brashear, and Eve Balseiro, won the county championship in 9:14.45, and the 4x100m relay team, Margot Richards, Mellinghoff, Alisa Kanganis, and Sophie Kohlhoff, placed 2nd (50.66), just behind New Rochelle.

For the boys' team, Alex Rizzo ran a 1:56.22 in the 800m, securing a second-place finish, and Avery Kane placed third in the shot put with 46-00.25.

Girls' Lacrosse

The No. 1 Broncos played in the sectional quarterfinals last Friday against No. 8 Albertus Magnus and walked away with a solid 18-10 victory. In the semifinals on Monday, the Bronxville girls wasted no time scoring against No. 5 Briarcliff. Ellie Walsh scored in the first minute of the game, followed by teammate Allie Berkery, who scored on an assist from Beth Finley 30 seconds later. The rain did not slow down the scoring power of the team, and the Broncos easily handled the Bears, winning 18-3. Bronxville will play No. 3 Putnam Valley in the sectional finals today at Yorktown at 5:00 pm.

Boys' Lacrosse

As the No. 1 seed in newly formed Class D, the Bronxville boys' lacrosse team earned a first-round play-off bye. The bye came at a good time because the team has been plagued by injuries this season and was able to rest a number of players during the first two play-off rounds. Last Friday afternoon, they beat No. 8 Hastings in the section quarterfinal game in a 12-0 shutout. High scorer for the Broncos was team captain Ara Atayan, with five goals. On Monday, the Broncos beat No. 4 Irvington 25-1 and will move on to the section final game against Westlake on Thursday at 7:00 pm at Mahopac High School.
