May 31, 2017: It is playoff season for the Broncos, and last week the girls' lacrosse team and the girls' track and field team captured sectional championships. In the past week, the boys' track and field team finished as the runner-up in Class C, the boys' lacrosse team lost in the sectional final to a determined Westlake, and three Bronxville golfers competed in sectionals. For more information, see below.
Girls' Lacrosse
The Bronxville girls' lacrosse team sailed through the sectional finals defeating Putnam Valley 19-4. It was the fourth sectional championship for the Broncos, who won the Section 1 Class C title in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
In the game held at Yorktown High School last Wednesday, the Bronxville offense could not be stopped: Mason Warble scored five goals, Olivia Jensen had three and five assists, Ellie Walsh had four, Lucy Hanrahan had two goals and two assists, and Beth Finley had a goal and an assist. Gianna DiMinno and Claire Kraemer each had three saves.
The Broncos, who play in the newly created Class D this year, received a bye in the first round of regionals and will play the winner of Schuylerville (Section 2)/Millbrook (Section 9) in the regional finals on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Suffern Middle School.

Girls' Track and Field
The Bronco girls won their 19th consecutive Class C title last week at Valhalla High School. Strong finishes by Kirsten Ircha (1st place, pentathlon), Sabrina Mellinghoff (1st place, 200m), Kaitlin Ryan (1st place, 800m and 1500m), and a sweep of the relays helped the Broncos win the meet with 176.5 points. The 4x100m relay team, Margot Richards, Mellinghoff, Alisa Kanganis, and Sophie Kohlhoff, recorded a 50.63, which qualifies the team for the New York State Championships.
Ryan, who joined the varsity Bronco team as an eighth-grader, has won a total of 20 gold medals at sectionals. Next up for Ryan and her Bronco teammates are state qualifiers, which will be held tomorrow and Friday at White Plains High School.
Boys' Track and Field
At the Class C Section 1 Championships, Alex Rizzo had an outstanding performance, winning sectional titles in the 800m, the 1600m, and the 3000m steeplechase. Avery Kane won the sectional championship in the shot put. The Bronco boys scored 98 points and finished second to Valhalla, which scored 138.

Boys' Golf
Three Bronxville golfers advanced to the final round of sectionals at Fenway Golf Club last Wednesday. The finals feature the top 30 golfers in Section 1 and included juniors Liam Bishop and Daniel Bettino and freshman Connor Stoltz. Bettino finished the final round tied for 18th with an 82-84-166, Stoltz tied for 23rd place (82-86-168), and Bishop tied for 27th (80-91-171). On a course where par is 70, only three Section 1 golfers broke 80. The top nine golfers will head to the state championships next week.
Boys' Lacrosse
Last Thursday night, the top-seeded Bronxville boys' lacrosse team was upset by No. 2 Westlake in the Section 1 Class D final by a score of 20-12. In the game held at Mahopac High School, Bronxville got off to a good start, scoring the first goal of the game, but Westlake countered quickly and began controlling possession by dominating at the face-off position. Though Westlake led by only one goal at halftime, the team pulled away in the second half as the Broncos were forced to play defense for the majority of the game.
High scorers for the Broncos were senior captain Ara Atayan, with two goals and three assists, senior Jerry Frost with two goals, and junior Alston Tarry with five goals and one assist. In addition to Atayan and Frost, the Broncos graduate seniors Chip Cushman, Andrew Murray, and James Swartz. Their record for the season, which included wins over highly ranked teams Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Rye, Iona Prep, Fordham Prep, and Mamaroneck, was 15-4.
Go Broncos.
