Oct. 11, 2017: The Bronxville girls' tennis team wrapped up the regular season last week with two big victories. The Broncos defeated Edgemont 4-3 on Monday to clinch their fourth consecutive league title and then rallied to defeat Section 1's top-ranked team, Ursuline, 5-2, on Thursday. It is the first time in two years that any team has beaten Ursuline. The Bronxville girls' team should move up to number one in the LoHud Power Rankings this week.
Seventh-grader Ava Bruno had two big wins at first singles. She defeated Edgemont's Shruti Kanna, 7-6, 2-0 (default) and had an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win against Ursuline's Laina Campos, one of the top players in the section. Also playing singles for the Broncos this season are junior Lindsey Cruikshank at second singles and freshman Katharine Forst in the third position.
The Broncos doubles teams have been a large part of the Broncos' success. Out of 13 matches played this season, the doubles teams have won 48 and lost only four. The first doubles team, sophomore Eva Dani and freshman Henriette Schmuck, are 9-3 on the year, and the second doubles team, freshmen Katie Formato and Sophia Sheumack, are 11-1. The final two doubles teams were undefeated. At third doubles, juniors Sarah Goodell and Alexandra Brumbaugh finished with a 12-0 record, and fourth doubles players, sophomore Isabella Patterson and freshman Rory Christian, were 11-0.
The Broncos finished the regular season 12-1 overall and 10-0 in their league, an amazing accomplishment for such a young team. The Section 1 team championships will commence the week of October 23.
This week, Bronxville's top players will compete in the individual conference championships at Edgemont High School. Lindsey Cruickshank will be in the singles draw, and three teams will compete in the doubles championships: Bruno and Forst, Dani and Schmuck, and Formato and Sheumack.
Go Broncos.
