Nov. 8, 2017: The Bronxville girls’ field hockey team finished the season as Class C Section 1 Champions with a 2-1 win over Pawling a week ago but fell 1-0 to Long Island’s Carle Place in the regional finals last Saturday. It was the fifth year in a row that the Broncos have captured the Class C sectional title.
In the sectional championship game held at Pace University on Wednesday night, the Broncos, outfitted with red headbands, took an early lead when Hadley Barr scored with an assist from Caroline Brashear. For the first fifteen minutes, No. 2 Bronxville dominated the play, but No. 4 Pawling, which had knocked out top-seeded North Salem in the semis, was not about to give up. The Tigers took control and tied up the game with a little more than 8 minutes left in the half.
In the second half, Bronxville had lots of opportunities to score off corner shots, but great defense by Pawling’s goalie, Kayla Chavarri, kept the Tigers in the game. Finally, Sunday Ladas took advantage of a shot blocked by Chavarri and hit the ball in, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead. Great defense by the Broncos held the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the game.
In the regional game held at Patchogue-Medford High School on Saturday, Bronxville took on Section 8’s Carle Place. In a hard-fought game, stellar Bronco defense kept the game scoreless until the Frogs scored off a penalty corner with a little more than seven minutes left in the game. The Broncos finished the season with a 15-4-1 record.
It was the last game for Bronxville seniors Hadley Barr, Claire Kraemer, and goalie Katie Gordon, who anchored the Bronco defense in the postseason. Seniors Hannah Weirens, Kat Ungvary, and Ava Austi provided strong offense during the season.
Go Broncos.
