Nov. 8, 2017: The Broncos will be well represented at the New York State Championships this coming weekend. The girls’ cross country team won its 21st consecutive sectional title last Saturday and will head upstate this weekend to compete in the state championship. Also competing at states are two members of the boys’ cross country team, Alex and Matt Rizzo. The state meet will be held at Wayne Central School District, which is 20 miles east of Rochester on Lake Ontario.
In the Sectional Championship meet at Bowdoin Park, the Bronxville girls won the Class C Championship easily with 29 points. Dobbs Ferry came in second with a score of 84. Natalie Weiner won the Class C Sectional Championship in a time of 20:33 and was followed by four Broncos: Gigi Chrappa, 5th, Emma Mandanas, 6th, Patty Haggerty, 8th, and Avery Widen, 9th.
Last year, the Broncos finished third in the state, and Section 6’s Newfane won the Class C title. This fall, the New York Sportswriters Association ranks Class C Syracuse CBA first, Newfane, second, and Bronxville, third.
At the boys’ sectional meet, the Rizzo brothers had strong finishes. Alex placed 2nd in 15:53.3, and Matt placed 4th in 17.14.3.
