Bronco Update: Girls' Basketball Wins Bill Green Tournament and Bronxville Relays Finish on Top at AT&T Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational

Dec. 20, 2017: It is the start of the winter season, and this past weekend the Broncos competed in two traditional sporting events. The basketball teams played in the Bill Green Tournament at The Bronxville School, and the track teams competed in the AT&T Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational at The Armory.

In the Bill Green Tournament, the Bronxville varsity girls defeated Hamilton in the first round and won the tournament championship on Saturday evening with a 58-54 victory over Hastings. In the tournament final, high scorers were Ashley Kaye with 18 points and Allie Berkery with 17. Berkery was named to the All-Tournament team and Kaye was named tournament MVP.

Because of the snow, the Friday night games were postponed until Saturday, and in the first round, the varsity boys lost to Pleasantville 45-35. The Broncos then battled Nanuet in the consolation round on Sunday and were down by two at the half but held on for a 35-34 win. Alston Tarry led with 16 points, and Eddy Connors and Billy Ramundo contributed 8 points each. Sacred Heart won the tournament championship with a 54-38 win over Pleasantville.

At the AT&T Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational, the Bronxville girls' relay teams showed they have great potential for the upcoming winter season. The 4x400m relay team (Laura Holland, Eve Balseiro, Caroline Brashear, and Sabrina Mellinghoff) placed first overall, setting a new meet record of 4:07.24. Holland, Balseiro, Patty Haggerty, and Brashear competed in the 4x800m, placing first for small schools and second overall with a time of 9:52.36. The Broncos' freshman/sophomore 4x200m relay (Caroline Ircha, Kelly Weild, Alisa Kanganis, and Sabrina Mellinghoff) placed first in 1:52.14. The freshman/sophomore 4x800m relay (Betsy Marshall, Sophia Prior, Molly Palma, and Avery Widen) came in second place in 10:28.31.

Matt and Alex Rizzo, along with Jack Kochansky and Tim Murray, placed second in the 4x800m relay in the small school division. An hour later, Matt and Alex ran the one-mile race, placing 13th and 14th, respectively, in the invitational division. Avery Kane placed 6th in the shot put for the small school division.
