Jan. 17, 2018: The Bronco varsity basketball team began 2018 with a bang, winning three straight league games in a week. Last Wednesday, they beat Clark Academy by the score of 71-53. Three players--all seniors--scored in double figures for the Broncos: Eddy Connors had 20, Alston Tarry added 19, and Billy Ramundo contributed 16.
On Friday, the team played Rye Neck at home, winning 55-41, with the support of their “Sixth Man” fan section, nicknamed “The Stable.” The fans came out in full force, attired in jungle-themed costumes, to cheer on the Broncos. Alston Tarry led the scoring with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Liam Bishop had 13, and junior Tim McGrath, who was hot from the three-point line, added 11.
On Saturday afternoon, the Broncos faced league rival Edgemont at home. The Broncos were seeking redemption for a loss to the Panthers at the buzzer earlier in the season. Though the score remained close throughout the game, Broncos never relinquished the lead and ultimately prevailed by a score of 50-36. Tarry and Bishop were the leading scorers, netting 24 and 14 points respectively.
The team will play away against Keio tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
Other Bronco Updates
Boys’ Swimming
For the past five years, the Bronxville boys’ swimmers have teamed up with New Rochelle to form a combined team. The team is 3-1-1 so far this season after having tied Clarkstown South at home last Thursday. Bronxville’s Andrew Babyak, who won the state championship in the 500 free last year, was recognized in the preseason as the top distance swimmer in the Hudson Valley by Lohud. He is undefeated so far this season.
“Right now I have put up the fastest time in a dual meet. Compared to some of the other kids in the state so far, I think I have the second fastest for the 500 free and the fastest for the 200. I should be in a good position for states."
Other competitive swimmers include Bronxville’s Tim Cushman and Finn Seibold and New Rochelle’s Michael Lawson. These swimmers have contributed to the team’s success as individuals and also as members of the relay teams. The 200 free and 400 free relays (Cushman, Lawson, Seibold, and Babyak) are also undefeated this season.
There are three more dual meets left, including a meet tomorrow against undefeated Horace Greeley.
“It will definitely be a close meet,” said Babyak. “It will come down to the fourth and fifth places.” Currently, Horace Greeley is in first place in the Division, Clarkstown is in second, and New Rochelle/Bronxville is in third.
Girls’ Indoor Track
At the Molloy Stanner Invitational held on January 13 at The Armory, the Bronxville girls’ 4x800m had a first-place finish with a time of 9:27:56, setting the top time in New York State so far this season. Natalie Weiner led off with a 2:21.53, followed by Patty Haggerty (2:24.11) and Laura Holland (2:22.06), and Caroline Brashear ran the anchor leg in 2:19.84. The Indoor Track and Field League 3B Championships will be held on Sunday, January 21, at 1:00 pm.
