Bronxville Boys' Basketball Team Hopes to Continue Winning Ways at 'Hoops for Heroes'

Jan. 24, 2018: The boys’ varsity basketball team has won five straight games with victories over Pleasantville and Keio last week. They hope to continue their winning streak when they face Haldane on Saturday at Croton-Harmon High School in the Fourth Annual “Hoops for Heroes” salute to men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. Started by former Bronxville Assistant Coach Ben Martucci, the games honor military service and raise money for two organizations that support injured veterans and their families.
This year, the Broncos’ honorary captain for the 1:00 game against Haldane is Joseph M. Molloy, the grandfather of Bronxville varsity players Liam and Hanna Bishop. After being drafted into the army in 1951, Molloy served in X Corps, a field artillery unit that fought near “Heartbreak Ridge” in Korea. He was stationed there until July 1953, two days before the war ended.
Molloy is an active member of St. Joseph’s parish. His son Sean and wife Lisa live in Cedar Knolls with their three children, Connor, Peter, and Betsy. Molloy’s daughter, Delia Bishop, and her husband, Jay, have three children, Liam, Hanna, and Molly. Jay’s father, James Bishop, is also a veteran, but he is recovering from surgery and will be unable to attend the event.
Past honorary coaches have included John Priesing, a U.S. Navy veteran and former board of education member, and Bobby O’Connor, a Bronxville grad and former Bronco basketball player and a U.S. Navy veteran.
