May 9, 2018: Alicia Berkery, Bronxville High School senior and accomplished lacrosse player, was named Con Edison’s Westchester Scholar Athlete of the Week. She was recognized for her athletic and academic achievements by a panel of athletic directors and coaches.
Berkery, who is captain of the varsity lacrosse team, is crucial to her team’s success on the field and demonstrates outstanding leadership skills. She has garnered All-League and All-Section honors in lacrosse. A three-sport athlete, Berkery was also captain of the varsity basketball team and co-captain of the varsity soccer team. Athletic Director Karen Peterson said she earned her leadership position because of her ability to communicate positively and motivate her teammates.
Guidance counselor Barbara Dhyne praised Berkery for her perseverance, humble spirit, and ability to successfully handle the demands of academics and sports.
“Allie is an impressive, three-season athlete who has learned the art of playing year-round varsity sports while also multitasking a rigorous academic life,” Dhyne said. “No matter the season, Allie manages her academics with independence and maturity while approaching each day with a passion to compete. In addition to her athletic talents, she is a kind, compassionate, and authentic young woman.”
Besides her dedication on the field, Berkery has been a grade representative in student government for three years and a participating member of the Athletic Council. Outside school, she volunteers in town to teach young children stick skills for lacrosse. She is also a babysitter, summer clerk in Cape Cod, and a lifeguard at a beach club.
Berkery will attend Northwestern University in the fall, where she will continue her academic and athletic pursuits.
