The field hockey season came to an end on Sunday after a hard-fought game against top- seeded Pawling in the Class C Sectional Championship game at Nyack High School. Both teams had their chances to score in the first half, but both came up short leaving the game tied 0-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bronxville’s Ellie Fahy fired a shot past Pawling goalie Eden Pitt to put the Broncos on the scoreboard. Pawling answered in the fourth quarter when Olivia Gerosa scored off an assist from Emily Nevermann to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team was able to score again in regulation, sending the game into a 10-minute, 7-on-7 overtime period. After a scoreless first overtime, the teams headed into a second 10-minute period. Both teams battled hard and had opportunities to score, but neither could break the tie.
With the score still tied at 1-1 after two overtime periods, the game went to a shootout to determine the sectional champion. Pawling’s Mackenzie Wahl and Shayna Martin scored in the shootout, while Kylie Hilbert scored for the Broncos, giving Pawling a 3-2 victory.
Bronxville goalie Isabelle Harrison had an outstanding performance, recording 11 saves during the game, which includes three in the shootout.
“While the scoreboard didn’t fall in our favor, the game was played with heart, execution, and determination from start to finish,” said Coach Jacquelyn Frawley. “Back in August, this squad faced a massive rebuilding feat after graduating 12 seniors last season. Yet, this team never hesitated. Players from every single grade—freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors alike—boldly stepped up to fill critical starting roles and do exactly what was needed for the team.”
The field hockey team finished the season with a 14-5 record. As the No. 2-seeded team in the sectional playoffs, the Broncos defeated No. 7 Albertus Magnus 5-2 in the quarterfinals and shut out No. 3 Pleasantville 4-0 in the semifinals to earn a spot in the championship game.
“Watching this young roster transform into a sectional finalist has been nothing short of inspiring, said Coach Frawley. “We could not be prouder of their unwavering dedication, resilience, and the bright future they have built for this program.”
