Columbia Professor Kristina Ford to Speak about City Planning at Concordia's Books & Coffee Thursday, April 10
Apr. 9, 2014: Kristina Ford, professor of professional practice and international public affairs at Columbia University, will discuss her recent book, The Trouble with City Planning: What New Orleans Can Teach Us, at Concordia College's Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 10, at 7:00 pm.
Winner of the Award for Distinguished Leadership from the Louisiana Chapter of the American Planning Association, Ford served as New Orleans's director of planning from 1992 to 2000 and chief of staff for New Orleans's deputy mayor in charge of public facilities, infrastructure, and community development from 2010 to 2011.
Her work with city planning both pre- and post-Katrina provides a unique perspective, and she uses her experience to illuminate the problems and possibilities facing city planners across the nation. Her book provides suggestions for how cities should be planned in the future.
Books and Culture proclaimed Ford's book "one of the best urban planning texts to come off the presses in the past decade . . . ."
Ford earned her PhD in urban and regional planning from the University of Michigan. A frequent speaker on urban affairs, she has appeared on CNN, BBC, and NPR. She has also contributed to the op-ed page of the New York Times and to Planning magazine.
Her research and teaching have taken her to a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States, including Columbia University, where she teaches the course Urban Policy and the Use of Land and the course Implementing Public Policy and Managing Outcomes.

Bronxville Public Library
The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.
The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.
The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children. All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
