By Lorraine Shanley, Member, Board of Trustees, The Bronxville Historical Conservancy

Feb. 26, 2020: On Friday, March 6, The Bronxville Historical Conservancy and Sarah Lawrence College will host Jill Lepore, Harvard University professor and author of the bestselling These Truths: A History of the United States, at 8 pm at Sarah Lawrence’s Reisinger Auditorium.

This free lecture is open to the public as a gift to the community from The Bronxville Historical Conservancy. Register at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 914-961-6790.

Lepore will spend the afternoon before her lecture with faculty and students from Sarah Lawrence, as a guest scholar in their E Pluribus Unum series.

Lepore joins an illustrious roster of previous Brendan Gill Lecture speakers, including Douglas Brinkley, Mo Rocca, Stacy Schiff, David Eisenhower, Jon Meacham, and Michael Beschloss, among others.

A staff writer at The New Yorker, who was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal and on NPR, Lepore has a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University and joined the Harvard History Department in 2003. She has written on a variety of subjects, from politics and history to literature, the rise of robots and automation, to superheroes.

Her book, The Secret History of Wonder Woman, was a prize-winning bestseller which one critic called a “lively, surprising and occasionally salacious history.” Her new book, IF THEN: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future, will be published in the fall. A revelatory account of the Cold War origins of the data-mad, algorithmic twenty-first century, Lepore argues that when facts were replaced by numbers, and now by data, there are consequences not only for how we know what we know but for how we form (or dismantle) political communities.

Lepore grew up in West Boylston, Mass., where her father was a junior high school principal and her mother, an art teacher. Before moving to Harvard, she taught at the University of California-San Diego from 1995 to 1996 and at Boston University. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her husband and three sons.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
