Bronxville Girls' Tennis Wins Leagues

Oct. 15, 2014: The girls' tennis team was crowned league champion last week after finishing the season with a perfect 7-0 record. It was the first time in many years that the girls captured the league title.
The Broncos switched leagues this year, and while it helped that they did not face Scarsdale or Ursuline, their current league is widely considered one of the toughest leagues in the section.
"Our biggest wins came against Edgemont, who is always good, and Keio, who had a very strong set of singles players," commented Coach Ted Garber. "Our strength all season has been our depth."
The team had strong performances from every spot in the lineup and had a winning record at every position. The Broncos were particularly strong at second, third, and fourth doubles. The doubles pairs of Ava Austi and Eva Dani, Krissy Marrinan and Isabelle Shinsato, and Lindsey Cruikshank and Alexandra Brumbaugh all went undefeated in league play.
"Entering the post-season tournaments, I think we have a good chance to send one singles and at least one doubles team to sectionals," said Garber. Garber, who is in his second year as varsity coach, is a 2002 Bronxville grad who played four years on the varsity tennis team.
In the post-season, the Broncos compete as individuals in the conference, sectional, and state tournaments. The conference tournament started yesterday, and the top five finishers at the conference championships will qualify for the sectional tournament, which will be held next week.
Bronxville's top singles player, senior Chrissy Simon, is the second seed in the conference singles tournament. Simon, who was named one of Section 1's elite six at the beginning of the season by Lohud, has a very good chance of qualifying for states this year. Simon committed to play at Johns Hopkins two weeks ago and is looking forward to playing with her former teammate, Amanda Austi, who is currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins.
In the conference doubles tournament, Caroline Schetlick and Christina Brumbaugh are the fourth seed, Lucy Hanrahan and Juliet Timmins are the sixth seed, and Austi and Dani are the eighth seed. Marrinan, Shinsato, Cruikshank, and A. Brumbaugh also made it into the draw.
The state tournament will be held November 1 to 3 at the City Tennis Center in Latham, New York. The top three singles players and doubles teams at sectionals will qualify for states.
Go Broncos.
