Girls' Soccer and Field Hockey Head to States; Girls' Cross Country Takes Second Place
Written by S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Nov. 12, 2014: It has been a dream season for the Bronco girls' athletic teams. The soccer, field hockey, and cross country teams had incredible success during the regular season, and in the post-season, all three made it to states. Girls' cross country finished up last Saturday with a second-place finish in the Class C state championships, while the soccer and field hockey teams will play in the state final four this coming weekend.
Girls' Soccer
The Bronxville girls' soccer team cruised to a regional championship with a 3-1 win over Section 4's Seton Catholic on Sunday. It is the third regional championship for the Broncos in the last five years. The team is now headed to the state semifinals, which will take place in Cortland this coming weekend.
In the game against Seton Catholic, the Broncos put points on the board early in the game with a goal by sophomore Beth Finley and an assist from Lucy Kohlhoff. Finley scored again before halftime on a pass from co-captain Killian Donohue to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead. At the start of the second half, Seton Catholic scored, but the Bronco defense was able to shut them down for the rest of the game. The final Bronco goal came on a free kick by sophomore Mason Warble to give the Broncos the victory.
Bronco scoring leaders include Caitlin Fryer, Kohlhoff, and Finley, but several other team members have scored, including Donohue, Rachael Peacock, Taylor Sears, and M. Warble.
The Bronxville defense has virtually shut down the opposition--giving up only 12 goals so far this season.
"Charlie [Warble] and Charlotte [Schmuck] have been great on defense," said Coach Don Cupertino, "but it is hard to single out any one player. All of them have been doing great."
Bronxville's near-perfect record, 19-1-0, propelled the team to a No. 3 ranking in the state. The Broncos will meet the No. 1-ranked team, Westhill, in the state semifinal on Saturday at noon in Cortland, where they hope to continue their winning ways.
"We play well as a team," said Donohue. "We will play our game--passing and controlling the ball."
"And," added teammate Beth Finley, "we play with heart. It is a big thing for us."
Field Hockey
The field hockey team solidly defeated Pine Plains on Sunday to capture the regional title. The Broncos led 1-0 at halftime and in the second half broke away, scoring three more goals for a 4-0 win. Scoring for the Broncos were Briana Alberghine with two and Lily Grass and Ellie Walsh with one each. The defense, including goalie Caroline Cahaney, was flawless. The Broncos will face Whitney Point on Saturday at 5:30 pm at Maine-Endwell High School near Binghamton.
Coach Jacquelyn Frawley has been with the team as the assistant or head coach for the last seven years, and during that time Bronxville has won five sectional titles. Frawley and all the players on the team are thrilled to have won a regional title this year.
"The key to the team's success is consistency," commented Frawley. "They have been playing the same positions since August, and they really know their support. That has really helped."
Alberghine leads the team in scoring, but many other girls have contributed. "So many girls have scored this season," said Frawley. "It is a coach's dream."
Cross Country
The girls' cross country team had high hopes of capturing its seventh straight state title, but this year the team was outpaced by East Aurora, a team that moved down to Class C from Class B this fall. It was predicted to be a close race, and East Aurora edged out Bronxville by just three points. Delia Hayes, who finished first for the Broncos, ended her senior cross country season with a fifth-place finish in Class C. She was followed by Kaitlin Ryan (13th), Olivia Scotti (23rd), Hilary Rizzo (38th), Lindsay Nobles (47th), Gigi Chrappa (69th), and Carlie Hoffer (90th). There were 127 girls in the Class C race.
