May 21, 2025: Sectional playoffs for baseball, golf, tennis, and flag football are underway, and the remainder of the Bronxville athletic teams are set to begin their post-season matchups this week. Sectional results and a preview of upcoming games are below.
Baseball
No. 11 Bronxville upset No. 6 Westlake in the first round of sectionals yesterday and will face No. 3 Nanuet in the sectional quarterfinals today.
Monday’s game against Westlake was tied 1-1 in the 10th inning before being suspended due to darkness. When play resumed yesterday, the Broncos edged out a 3-2 victory in the 12th inning.
Henry Vail pitched seven strong innings (1R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB, 13SO), followed by Sam Dicker (2IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 2SO), and Gavin Smart, who earned the win (2IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 2SO).
Jake Donnelly, Jack Gangemi, and Vail each scored a run, while Max Zarba and Smart drove in one run apiece.
Golf
The windy conditions at Waccabuc Country Club on Monday during round 1 of the Section 1 Golf Championship made for some fast greens and difficult scoring. Sophomore Tommy Ruhanen qualified for round 2, which will take place at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on May 29th. Timmy Kenny, a sophomore, just missed the cut with an 88.
The top 9 golfers after round 2 (combined score) will represent Section 1 in the State Tournament on June 8 - 9th at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville, NY.
The golf team shared the League Title with Blind Brook and finished the season with a 9-7 record. Juniors Andrew Gay and Alex Savoy were instrumental in many matches as were Senior Danny Kelty and junior James O'Shaughnessy. Three seniors will graduate this year: Kelty, Jack O'Hara and Colby Hilbert.
Tennis
Bronxville’s Jackson Fino defeated Idan Yedid of Horace Greeley, 2-6 7-5, 6-2, to win the third-place match at Sectionals. With that win, Fino secured a place at the New York State Championships, which will be held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing on June 7th.

Girls’ Flag Football
The flag football team played in the quarterfinals of the Class C Sectional Championship on May 17th and defeated Dobbs Ferry 20-12. The No. 3 Broncos will play at No. 2 Ardsley today in the semifinals. If successful, the Broncos will play in the sectional final on Saturday, May 24th, at Lakeland High School at 4PM.
Boys’ lacrosse
The 9-4 boys’ lacrosse team won seven straight games before losing their final game of the season to Yorktown, ranked No. 6 in the LoHud Power Rankings, by a score of 10-8.
The team’s four losses this season came against Class A Mamaroneck, Class B Horace Greeley, Iona Prep, and Pleasantville, a longtime Class D rival. After losing 14-10 to the Panthers in late April, the Broncos are likely to receive the No. 2 seed in sectionals.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season with a 19-6 win over Scarsdale and a 15-5 loss to Rye, the No. 2 seed in all of Section 1. The Broncos (8-6) earned the No. 3 seed in the Class D Sectional Tournament and will open postseason play in the quarterfinals on May 27 against the winner of the No. 6 Westlake vs. No. 11 Pawling matchup.
Pleasantville (14-2) secured the top seed, followed by Briarcliff (11-4) at No. 2, and Irvington (11-5) at No. 4.
Bronxville has faced one of the toughest schedules in Section 1 and should be battle-tested heading into the playoffs. Ranked No. 10 in the LoHud Power Rankings, the Broncos played nearly every top-ranked team, including No. 1 Nyack, No. 2 Rye, and No. 3 Suffern. They faced only one Class D opponent during the regular season.
Outdoor Track and Field
Boys
At the Westchester County Championships this past weekend, the boys’ outdoor track and field team held their own against much larger schools finishing second overall with 71 points—trailing only to defending champion Iona Prep (82.5) and edging out New Rochelle (51) and Mount Vernon (36).
