Bronco Spring Sports Preview: Lacrosse and Baseball

Written by S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Mar. 25, 2015: Three weeks ago it was hard to believe that the spring teams would be able to get outside and practice. The turf was covered with about a foot and a half of snow and the temperatures were unforgiving. In an effort to get the spring sports season going, students headed to the field with shovels, clearing a small spot on the turf for practice. Another round of shoveling and a couple of sunny days above freezing, and the turf was finally free of snow.
Without the use of fields, the coaches had to be creative. The baseball team spent an afternoon at Pure Barre with Holly Morris, who donated a 55-minute CORE workout to eleven varsity players and two coaches. The baseball team will have to wait a little longer for its field to be ready, but the lacrosse teams are opening this week. The boys' lacrosse team will open at home today against Mamaroneck, and the girls' team has its home opener on Thursday against Scarsdale.
The lacrosse and baseball teams are previewed below. Track and field, boys' tennis, and golf will be covered next week.
Boys' Lacrosse
The boys' lacrosse team graduated its most decorated class in 2014, having won four straight Section 1 championships, having made four appearances at the state semifinals, having competed in the state championship game for the last two years, and having won it all last year. Fifteen boys return from last year's team, including six starters, and the team captains are Michael Crawford, Ted Forst, Henry Grass, and Charlie Tarry. League opponent Pleasantville is a well-coached team and should be very competitive this year, but the Broncos will also face several out-of-section teams, including Smithtown East and West, Iona Prep, Fordham Prep, Greenwich, and Salesianum in Delaware. Today's season opener is against Mamaroneck, a team that is ranked #3 in the Journal News power rankings. Bronxville is ranked #2 behind Yorktown.
Girls' Lacrosse
Last season the girls' lacrosse team won Bronxville's first-ever sectional and regional titles and advanced to the Class C New York State semifinals. This year's team returns twelve players and is led by captains Chase Judkins, Caroline Cahaney, and Charlotte Reynolds. The league has changed this year, but the girls will still play neighboring Edgemont, Scarsdale, and Mamaroneck and will also make two trips to Long Island in the next week, playing North Shore on Saturday and Oyster Bay on Monday. "The girls are working hard and off to a great start," commented Coach Sharon Robinson. "Our team is young and motivated."
Baseball
Under the leadership of returning captains Tyler Schultz, Graham Klimley, and Jack Braumuller, the baseball team started off-season workouts in October. With nine seniors, five juniors, two sophomores, and a mix of talented freshman on the roster, the team is looking to improve upon its 8-12 record from last year. The Broncos return a deep group of experienced players, including Schultz, Braumuller, Klimley, Joe Pepe, Jack Redpath, Matt Hunke, and David Cyganowski. The boys are scrimmaging Keio and New Rochelle this week and will head to Florida next week before their season officially opens on April 9. The home season opener is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at 11:00 am against Valhalla.
