Apr. 29, 2015: The Bronco spring teams continue to make strong showings. Below is a summary of where they stand now.
Boys' Lacrosse
Henry Grass became Section 1's new leading all-time scorer last week. In the away game against Croton, Grass scored his 393rd point to surpass Tom Nelson, a Yorktown player who set the record in 1983. Grass, who is a five-year varsity starter, has helped the team go deep into the post-season for the last four years. The Broncos went all the way last year, winning the Class C state championship. Grass will play for Johns Hopkins in the fall.
The 8-3 Broncos, currently ranked fifth in the state by the New York State Sportswriters Association, play a tough spring schedule. In addition to their league opponents, they also compete against top teams from Long Island. Last week they defeated Somers 14-9 and Croton Harmon 20-5 but suffered a 20-11 loss to Long Island's Smithtown East, a team that is ranked seventh in the state in Class A. The Broncos have a week and a half to go in the regular season and will play their last league game against Irvington at home today at 4:30 pm.
Girls' Lacrosse (10-1 Record)
The Bronxville girls' lacrosse team has a nine-game winning streak with wins over Briarcliff and Ursuline last week and a 19-5 win over Irvington yesterday. In the 20-6 win against Briarcliff last Wednesday, the Bears took an early 2-0 lead, but after a Bronco timeout, Bronxville roared back with eight straight goals. The Broncos, who have great offensive depth, had five different players score in that run: Lucy Hanrahan, Mason Warble, Ellie Walsh, Allie Berkery, and Caroline Cahaney. In the 19-7 win over Ursuline last Saturday, top scorers included Lilly Grass (6/2), Cahaney (4/2), Beth Finley (4), and Warble (3).
Yesterday's game against Irvington was part of Bronco Spirit Week, and the team held a fundraiser for One Love, a foundation focused on ending violence in relationships. The foundation was started in 2010 with the help of Bronco coach Sharon Robinson, whose cousin, Yeardley Love, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend at the University of Virginia.
This week Walsh and Berkery were named to the Hudson Valley Regional Team and will compete in the U.S. Lacrosse Women's National Tournament at Lehigh University in late May. Grace Randall was named as an alternate.
The Bronco girls, who are ranked first in Class C, moved up to tenth place in the Lohud power rankings last week. They will face Class A Mamaroneck, number 8 in the power rankings, on Saturday at home at 3:00 pm.
Golf
Last week the Bronxville boys' golf team edged out Rye by a score of 204-208. At Rye Golf Club, where par is 36, Chris Gay finished first with 35. Also scoring for the Broncos were Matt Bettino (40), Jared Hendrick (40), Matt McCloskey (44), and Liam Bishop (45).
Baseball (3-4)
It was fan appreciation day at the Bronco game on Saturday. There was a large crowd on hand for a very exciting game against rival Tuckahoe. The boys won 6-5 in extra innings with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth by John Seminara over rival Tuckahoe. Jack Braumuller, Graham Klimley, and Tyler Schultz had clutch hits, and Joe Pepe and Tyler Schultz pitched for the Broncos.
The baseball team was raising money for the Zoe B. Klimley Scholarship Fund at the Taft School. A bake sale, a Bronco baseball souvenir sale, and a 50-50 raffle garnered $1,510 for the fund. Young fans received free Bronco baseball t-shirts, player autographs, and a chance to run the bases.
Girls' and Boys' Track
Four Bronco relay teams participated in the Penn Relays last week. The meet, which has been held at the University of Pennsylvania since 1895, is one of the biggest track events of the spring with teams from the US, Canada, and the Caribbean. The Bronxville girls' distance medley relay finished in fifth place with a time of 12:09.20 (Delia Hayes (3:44.02), Hilary Rizzo (1:02.11), Laura Holland (2:19.33), and Kaitlin Ryan (5:03.76)). The girls' DMR relay is now ranked number one in New York State. Other participating teams included:
