2015 Fall Bronco Athletes Honored at Sports Awards Evening: See List of Winners

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Dec. 9, 2015: On December 1, fall athletes were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments at the annual sports awards evening. Administrators, coaches, and student-athletes gathered in the high school gym to honor both team effort and individual achievement.
Six Bronxville teams won their respective league championships: girls' and boys' cross country, girls' and boys' soccer, field hockey, and girls' tennis. Both the field hockey and the girls' cross country teams were sectional champs, and the girls' cross country team was the state runner-up in Class C.
While the evening was upbeat and celebratory, there was a moment of silence to remember Thomas Jakelich, who died in October of injuries sustained from a collision with another player during a soccer game. Jakelich, who attended The Bronxville School last year, was a junior attending Loyola School in Manhattan.
The sports awards evening honored the Broncos with special coaches' awards and All-League and All-Section recognition, but there were also awards honoring past players, coaches, and athletic directors. The Bob Burt Award, given for courageous play, honors the memory of a former Bronco football player who was killed in Vietnam. The late Max McGrath, a columnist for MyhometownBronxville, played football with Burt in the early sixties and wrote about his teammate in one of his columns.
"He [Burt] played hard, tough and fair, with total commitment," wrote McGrath. "If you read his letters from V-Nam, you would see he never lost his team commitment." This year, senior Will von Mehren was the recipient of the Bob Burt Award.
Awards were also given out honoring former athletic director and football coach John Fearon (1955-1962), former football coach Vito Priore (1974-1986), former teacher and soccer coach Stu Bush (1977-2009), and Jack Murray, an educator with The Bronxville School for over 50 years.
