Bronxville Ski Team Welcomes Winter Storm Jonas

Jan. 27, 2016: Winter Storm Jonas was exciting news for the merged Bronxville-New Rochelle high school ski team. Sadly, this year the weather has not cooperated for skiers. The warm temperatures and lack of snow delayed the start of the season.
Veteran ski coach Jim Agnello has seen many different weather conditions over the years and is glad the recent snowstorm will now allow his team to catch up on its season. "The lack of snow and unusually warm weather has been a 'perfect storm,' causing the season to become only about four weeks long and resulting in major scheduling challenges," said Agnello. "I am confident with the new snow and athletes' dedication, it will all work out, and we will continue to have a strong showing at sectionals and states."
The ski team has 36 members and spent its early season practices before Christmas rollerblading in the school gym. It was not until the second week of January that the Broncos were able to hit the slopes at Campgaw in Mahwah, New Jersey, for on-mountain ski practice. In the past, the ski team competed at Tuxedo Ridge in Tuxedo, New York, but, unfortunately, that ski resort closed this season. This year the Broncos compete at Thunder Ridge, in Paterson, New York. Their first slalom meet was last Thursday, January 21; 21 days into the month, there was finally enough snow to set a course.
It was a clean sweep for Bronxville. The boys' and girls' teams performed well, with wins against Edgemont, Croton, and Ardsley. Returning captains senior Saige Sunier and junior Remi Laurence led the team to victory, each finishing first for Bronxville. Stefanie Yudell, New Rochelle captain, was third overall for the girls, Sunier placed fourth, senior co-captain Celia Haims was seventh, and sophomore Martha Thomas took eighth. For the boys, Laurence was second, followed by teammates Charlie Roseberry and Eli Sills, the senior New Rochelle captain.
The team is off this week because of midterms but will resume racing next week.
Go Broncos.
