Bronco Basketball Teams Head to the Playoffs: Boys' Varsity Basketball Upsets Defending League Champ, Woodlands

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Feb. 10, 2016: Tuesday, February 2, was "senior night," the final regular season home game for the Bronxville boys' varsity basketball team. Just before tip-off, the team's three seniors, Alex Baxter, Matthew Bettino, and Andrew Harwood, were introduced at center court along with their parents. The team then capped off the evening with an upset win over reigning league champion Woodlands. The win is likely to give the Broncos a home playoff game.
After losing by just four points at Woodlands, Bronxville was seeking redemption. Although they trailed by four points at the half, the Broncos grabbed the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Woodlands 23-12 to take the lead. Sophomore Eddy Connors spurred the lead change with an outstanding defensive effort that held the Woodlands leading scorer to just two points. Sophomore Jeff Sargent added to the defense by taking two charges late in the game. The offense was driven by proficient three-point shooting by Matt Toal, Alston Tarry, Jack Reilly, and Brian DePaul. Tarry led the scoring with 21 points, and Toal added 14.
The seeding meetings for Section 1 Class B basketball are this week, and the boys' team is likely to secure a home game for the first round of playoffs. The girls' basketball team (13-6) finished the season in third place in its league behind Woodlands, the top Class B team in the state, and a very competitive Ardsley team. The Bronco girls should be seeded between 6th and 8th in Class B, but official seeds will not be released until tonight.
If both teams are able to secure home field advantage for the first round of playoffs, both the boys and the girls will play at The Bronxville School next Wednesday, February 17.
Go Broncos.
