Apr. 6, 2016: The Bronxville boys' lacrosse team is the Class C favorite this year, but in non-league play this spring, it faces some serious competition against top-ranked teams.
In the season opener last week, the Broncos, who ranked #6 in the Lohud Power Rankings, defeated #7 Mamaroneck, 10-7, with junior Jerry Frost leading the team with four goals and junior Ara Atayan scoring two. Goalie Andrew Harwood had 14 saves.
The Bronco team, headed by co-captains Atayan and seniors Tucker Duncan and Jack Gelinas, is deep in talent. Atayan, named one of the top twelve players in Section 1, has already committed to the University of North Carolina, and Gelinas and Duncan have both committed to Bucknell. Unfortunately for the Broncos, Duncan is out for the season with a knee injury. Other top players include R.J. Ambrose, face-off specialist Ralph Chrappa, and goalie Harwood.
In the first two weeks of the season, the team faces a tough schedule. With two early-season wins under their belt, the team headed to Manhasset High School last Saturday to compete in the One Love Springfest. Playing against Syosset, the #10-ranked team in the Northeast, the Broncos fell 11-10 in a very competitive game.
Tomorrow they will play Section 1's top-ranked team, Yorktown, at home at 4:30 pm. The Huskers made it to the Class B state semifinals last year and have eight Division 1 recruits on the team this year.
Next Thursday, April 13, Bronxville will play an away game against rival Pleasantville. The Broncos, four-time Class C Section 1 champions, defeated Pleasantville 9-7 in the 2014 sectional finals but lost to the Panthers 9-7 last year.
It is a tough couple of weeks for the Broncos, but Coach Tim Horgan is looking forward to a successful season.
"The energy has been great and practices have been nothing but positive thus far. It's a fun group of guys with tons of potential, and we're anxious to see what they can do. We are off to a good start, and we hope to carry that energy and momentum into the next few games."
Go Broncos.
