Bronxville Girls' Lacrosse and Girls' Track and Field Win Sectional Championships

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Jun. 1, 2016: With the regular season ending, the Bronco teams participated in sectional playoffs last week. The girls' track and field team and the girls' lacrosse team won their respective sectional titles, and two members of the boys' golf team, Connor Daly and Chris Gay, placed well enough in the sectional tournament to qualify for the New York State Championships. In the sectional finals held at White Plains High School last Wednesday, the Bronxville boys' lacrosse team lost 4-3 to rival Pleasantville in a game that went into double overtime.
Girls' Lacrosse
The top-ranked Bronxville girls' lacrosse team made it seem easy last Thursday night when they faced No. 6 Pearl River in the Class C sectional final. The Broncos scored three quick goals and were up by four at halftime. In the second half, the Broncos could not be stopped. Lilly Grass, Olivia Jensen, Mason Warble, Ellie Walsh, Lucy Hanrahan, and Allie Berkery all scored to give the Broncos a 19-8 victory. It was the third straight year that the Broncos defeated the Pirates in the Class C Sectional Championship.
The Broncos were lucky to finish the game. Just prior to the awards ceremony, a major area power outage turned the stadium dark. Bronxville's Berkery, who had five goals and one assist, was awarded player of the game.
Bronxville will play Section 9's Millbrook in the regional semifinals today at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. The winner of the Bronxville-Millbrook game will play against the Section 2 champion in the regional final. Last year, Bronxville won the regional championship and reached the state semifinals before losing to Honeoye Falls-Lima, 14-10.
The state championships will be held on June 10 and 11 at SUNY Cortland.
Track and Field
At the Section 1 Class C Track and Field Championships held at Valhalla High School, the Bronxville girls outscored Valhalla 190 to 134 and took home their 18th consecutive sectional title.
The season is coming to a rapid finish for the Bronxville senior girls, many of whom have run together for six years. It was their day to shine. Hilary Rizzo placed second in the 1500m and fourth in the 800m, and Caroline DePaul finished third in the 200m. Also contributing to the scoring were Saige Sunier and Veronica Walsh in the steeplechase, Nicola Phillips in the 800m, and Noor Ahmad in the triple jump.
Junior Kaitlin Ryan continued her winning season, finishing first in the 1500m at the Westchester County Championships and winning Class C sectional titles in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m. Sophie Kohlhoff was the sectional champ in the 200m, and Eve Balseiro won the sectional title in the high jump.
The Bronco girls scored in 16 of 19 events, missing only in the high hurdles, shot put, and discus.
The Bronxville boys finished in third place at the sectional meet with strong performances by Avery Kane, who won sectional championships in the shot put and discus and Michael Landy, who finished second in four different events.
