Oct. 19, 2016: The Bronxville girls’ tennis team finished the season with a 10-1 record, winning the league title for the third consecutive year. They suffered an early loss to Edgemont but came back during Homecoming Week to defeat the Panthers 4-3. This season, the Broncos also defeated Scarsdale, a team they have not beaten in at least four years. The Bronco girls are ranked No.3 in the Section behind Ursuline and Harrison.
In singles play, senior captain Christina Brumbaugh finished the season with a 5-3 record, and second singles player, senior captain Lucy Hanrahan, finished with a 6-4 record. Sophomore Lindsey Cruikshank had a fantastic year at third singles with a 9-2 record.
One of the Bronco team’s biggest strengths this year was its depth at doubles. Playing first doubles, ninth-grader Eva Dani and eighth-grader Katharine Forst finished the season with an 8-3 record and are widely considered one of the top teams in the area. The second doubles pair, senior captain Olivia Jensen and sophomore Sarah Goodell, contributed to the team’s success with a 5-2 record.
The third doubles team, eighth-graders Katie Formato and Sophia Sheumack, were one of the biggest surprises this season. Despite their youth, they were dominant with an 8-1 record. Their lone loss came to Scarsdale in a third set super-tiebreaker.
The fourth doubles team, sophomore Alexandra Brumbaugh and senior Maryasa Krivitskaya, was critical to the Broncos' success. Twice this season, in two of the team’s biggest matches against Scarsdale and Edgemont, the match came down to this fourth doubles pair with the overall score tied at 3-3. Both times, Brumbaugh and Krivitskaya were able to clinch the victory for the team. They finished the season with a perfect 8-0 record.

Nine players qualified for Conferences, which were held this past weekend. Bronxville’s top singles player, Christina Brumbaugh, lost in the quarterfinal round, and the first doubles team, Forst and Dani, lost in the semifinals. Olivia Jensen and Sarah Goodell along with Katie Formato and Sophia Sheumack lost in the doubles quarterfinals.
Because of their success this season, the Broncos have been invited to participate in the upcoming team tournament that looks to determine the top team in the area. It is an eight-team draw, and the first round match will be against either Fox Lane or Yorktown at the Bronxville Field Club on Monday, October 24.
Other Bronco News
There should be lots of activity at Chambers Field this weekend. The football team will play its final game of the regular season against top-seeded Woodlands at 2:30 pm, and both girls’ soccer and girls’ field hockey could potentially need the field for the first round of playoffs. The seeding and details will be determined at the seeding meeting tonight. The girls’ soccer team is likely to be seeded No. 2 and will have home field advantage on Saturday. The field hockey team will get the top seed in Class C and most likely will have a bye in the first round, but if they have to play in the first round, they will also need to use Chambers Field. It could be a juggling act for field time. The boys’ soccer seeding meeting was held last night, and the Bronxville boys received the No. 3 seed. They will play at home against No. 14 Westlake on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
The girls’ and boys’ cross country teams won their respective league championships on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. Bronxville competes in League 3B against Edgemont, Keio Blind Brook, and Rye Neck. On the girls’ side, senior Kaitlin Ryan took the top spot in a time of 16:20.60 and was followed by six more Broncos: Patty Haggerty, Sydney Coddington, Emma Mandanas, Avery Widen, Gigi Chrappa and Lyric Abbott. Matt Rizzo placed first for the boys in 14:20.50, followed by brother Alex in 6th, Joe Dougherty, 7th, Evan Downs, 8th, and Tim Murray, 9th.
Go Broncos.
