Sept. 27, 2023: The Broncos are one month into the fall season and just about halfway through their regular schedule. September has been an especially challenging month with unpredictable weather resulting in many cancellations. The teams will be busy in October playing both scheduled and re-scheduled games.
Like most other fall teams this year, the girls’ varsity tennis team has played very few matches due to the unique combination of very warm temperatures and lots of rain. So, although they had an excellent pre-season, the first three weeks of the regular season has only allowed the team to play four times.
The Broncos, led by co-captains Victoria McEnroe, Hannah Shammas, and Gabbi Bici, opened the season with a 5-0 sweep against Briarcliff, last year’s No. 1 seed in the Division 2 Team Tournament. In the second match of the season, the Broncos lost to Mamaroneck, a Division 1 school, who edged out Bronxville 3-2. They also lost to Division 2 rival Edgemont in a third set super tiebreaker. The Bronxville team will get a chance to play Edgemont again in a match on October 6th at the National Tennis Center in Queens, home of the U.S. Open.
Last Friday at the Bronxville Field Club, the team had a decisive 4-1 win over league opponent Rye Neck, bringing the team record to 2-2. Bronxville has three standout singles players: McEnroe (1st), Annette Dani (2nd) and Shammas (3rd). Starting at first doubles are Bici and Isabel Haller and at second doubles are Addie Pullkinan and Rose Woolley.
Singles players (l to r): Victoria McEnroe, Hannah Shammas, and Annette Dani.
The Broncos will play twice this week at the Bronxville Field Club, and their short season will conclude on October 6th. The Individual Sectional Tournament begins on October 7th at Harrison High School.
Football

In a home game last Saturday at Chambers Field, the football team lost 12-7 to long-standing Class C rival Dobbs Ferry. Rain started as a light drizzle at the beginning of the game and became a downpour at halftime, making it difficult for the players and keeping the fans away.
In the Broncos opening drive, they moved the ball deep into Dobbs territory with help from running back Davis Patterson and receivers Wyatt Gravier and Jack Gangemi, but they could not score. The Eagles came back with a long drive of their own scoring at the start of the second quarter. A failed extra point brought the score to 6-0.
With 7:38 left in the third quarter, a Bronco punt pushed the Eagles back to the 11-yd line, but in the next play Dobbs Ferry ran the ball back to the Bronco 22 and scored two plays later.
Trailing 12-0 in the 3rd quarter with just 4:05 left, the Broncos put together another long drive both on the ground and in the air. Quarterback Connor Kenny connected with Wyatt Gravier, Will Mattson, and Jack Gangemi, and handed off to Brian Formato to bring the ball to the Dobbs Ferry 22 early in the 4th quarter. In the next play, Formato ran in it for a Bronco touchdown. Gabe Maicon kicked the extra point to bring the score to 12-7.
The Broncos have four more regular season games. They opened their season with a 28-0 win over Chester, but suffered a 21-19 loss to Tuckahoe in Week 2. They will play at Haldane on Saturday at 1:30 and do not have a scheduled game Columbus Day weekend.
Girls’ Soccer

The Bronxville girls’ soccer team has put together a string of six wins to bring its record to 7-1. Last week, the Broncos had a 2-1 win over Dobbs Ferry and a 2-0 win over Hastings. In the game held yesterday at home against Westlake, the game remained scoreless until the last three minutes when Amy Villanueva found the back of the net. Bronxville won 1-0.
The Broncos are currently at the top of Class B with Rye Neck (4-0-3) in second place and Croton (4-1-1) in third. Bronxville’s only loss occurred in the second game of the season against Class A Albertus Magnus. The Falcons, who won the New York State Championship last year, played this past weekend in Tennessee. Their game against Beardon High School, the top-ranked team in the country, resulted in a 1-1 tie, ending Beardon’s 57 -game winning streak.
The girls will have their work cut out for themselves on Thursday when they play at Irvington, who is ranked 3rd in Class A with a 6-1-1 record.

There was a “doubleheader” at the Bronxville School on Tuesday as girls’ soccer played Westlake on Chambers and the field hockey team competed against North Rockland on Hayes. In the field hockey game, North Rockland first scored in the third quarter with 6 minutes left, but the Broncos tied at the end of third with a goal by Caroline Moore assisted by Izzy Yeon. With 5:15 left in the game, Bronxville scored again to capture a 2-1 win. Zoe Loader scored the second goal with an assist from Frannie Krause and Lilah Keating.
The field hockey team is 3-3-1 and will play at home tomorrow at 5PM against 4-1 Pleasantville.
Boys’ Soccer
The boys’ soccer team is 2-4 with wins over Croton-Harmon (2-1) and Yonkers Montessori (2-1). In yesterday’s game at Irvington, the Broncos lost 7-2. The boys’ team has a heavy schedule this coming week with two games against the Obama School and games against both Rye Neck and Irvington.
Cross Country
The cross country teams were set to race at Six Flags in New Jersey last weekend but with Tropical Storm Ophelia moving up the coast, the team bowed out. They resumed racing yesterday with a meet at Briarcliff and will head up to the Milton Dome for the Pearl River Invitational on Saturday.
Go Broncos.
