Bronxville 5th/6th-Grade Football Team Wins Westchester Youth Football League Championship with 26-22 Victory over Armonk

Nov. 23, 2016: This past Friday evening under the lights at Haindl Field, the Bronxville 5th/6th-grade football team defeated Armonk to win the Westchester Youth Football League Championship. It was a tough, grueling contest that pitted the top two seeds in the county against each other.

At the outset, Bronxville started out strong. The boys received the ball first and immediately went to work scoring touchdowns on the first three possessions. The Broncos were up 20-0 before the first quarter was complete.

Armonk, which came into the game with a solid 7-2 record, fought back valiantly and responded with a bruising running attack. Despite the onslaught, the Broncos held firm and stopped Armonk short on several crucial fourth-down conversion attempts. At the end of the game, Bronxville held on for a thrilling 26-22 win. With this win, the Broncos finished the season 9-1 and won the league title for the second consecutive year.

The coaching staff is made up of dedicated parents Robert Freeman, George Jaquette, Mike Hommeyer, Bill Knox, Mark Liggitt, Chris Lockwood, Rob MacNaughton, Vincent McBride, Dan Olympio, and Tim Stephens.

The Westchester Youth Football League was started in 2008 as a way to bring the towns in the county together to form a football league that puts the players first and focused on teaching the fundamentals of football. The league is a member of USA Football, which partners with the NFL to develop a training methodology that is called "heads up" football. With all the emphasis on and awareness of head injuries, each coach is required to complete a certification course.
