Bronco Girls' Lacrosse Finishes as State Runner-up

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Jun. 14, 2017: June brings the excitement of playoffs, which are some of the most exciting moments of a high school team's season. The Bronxville girls' lacrosse team experienced both highs and lows during playoff season. They sailed through sectionals, did not miss a beat in regionals, and played "their" game, finally winning in the state semifinals after having lost the previous three years. They seemed to be heading toward their final victory. But a win in the state finals was not to be. In the championship game, the Broncos lost to Skaneateles 12-11 in overtime, just as they had done last year in the state semis.
The Broncos state appearance this year started off on a high note. Playing in the semifinals against Long Island's Mattituck-Southold, Bronxville had a slow start, losing the draws and allowing Mattituck-Southold an early 4-2 lead. Eventually, the Broncos found their rhythm and scored eight straight goals to take a 12-4 lead. Scoring from Mason Warble, Beth Finley, Allie Berkery, and Olivia Jensen helped lead the Broncos to a 13-7 victory. Gianna DiMinno had six saves for Bronxville, and Olivia Jensen was named player of the game. It was the first time a Section 1 team defeated a Long Island team in the state tournament since 2005.
In the state final game between Bronxville and Skaneateles, the Lakers took an early 2-1 lead, but the Broncos persevered, scoring seven unanswered goals. At halftime, the Broncos had a 9-6 lead, but Skaneateles evened the score in the second half to 11-11 with just four minutes left in regulation time. The Broncos had the last possession, but they were unable to score the winning goal sending the game into overtime. DiMinno kept the Broncos alive with two saves, but in the second overtime, Kyle Sears scored to give the Lakers the win.
