Nov. 9, 2022: For the first time in 19 years, our Bronco Boys XC team are Section One champs!
Last Saturday, the team ran the Section One Championship at Bowdoin Park, Wappingers Falls.
“It’s got to be the most difficult courses in NY state, VERY hilly, said Jim Agnello, head coach. "Our score was 39 points and Briarcliff, the second-place team had 83 points, and Irvington was 102. We’ve been struggling all year to keep a tight gap between first and 5th, and we really pulled it all together at the championship.
Going into the race on Saturday, the team were neck and neck with Briarcliff for most of the season, Bronxville beating Briarcliff and then Briarcliff beating Bronxville.
"I was confident that our team was only getting in better shape, the gun went off and it was out of my hands. I had full confidence in my athletes and they more than delivered. It has been 19 years since we won sectionals and had many 1-point losses over these years. I could not be more proud of this group of student-athletes as runners and role models for our school community,” said Agnello.
The three Captains are Ian Gegenwarth, JW Henningson and Ellis Goodson.
Goodson said: “The team worked very hard at running together in practice after practice, and this allowed us to win as a tight unit. I’d like to thank my co-captains Ian who really helped build the team over the last few years and JW who brought his endless joy and optimism to every practice. And the coaches, Jim Agnello and Vic Palumbo who motivated us and provided the perfect strategy. And of course, all the amazing guys on the team.”
The NY state Championships will be held this Saturday at at Vernon Verona Sherrill HS, Vernon, NY. "I simply can not say enough times, just how proud I am of our team and season,” Agnello said.
"Go Broncos on to Victory!” added Goodson.
