Sep. 20, 2017:  Back-to-school came early for the Bronxville soccer teams, which opened their season on September 1 with the first round of BroncoFest, an annual soccer tournament and fundraiser featuring four boys' and four girls' teams. The final rounds of the BroncoFest tournament were held this past Saturday at Chambers Field.

The Bronxville girls' team defeated Arlington B in the first round, and on Saturday the team won the championship game, defeating Valhalla 5-0. Junior Catherine Faville scored two goals for Bronxville and was named tournament MVP, and Alexis Raviol, Laura Holland, and Devin Portner scored one apiece. Named to the All-Tournament Team were two Broncos, Rachael Peacock and Izzy Sondey, and two Vikings, Allison Portera and Sierra Lockhart. In the consolation round, Arlington B defeated Westlake 2-1.

The BroncoFest was started in 2006, and the Bronco girls have won the tournament every year except one. This year’s team has started off the season with a 6-0 record and was ranked No. 10 in the preseason LoHud Power Rankings. It is the only Class B team to make the top-ten list. The Bronco girls will play at Eastchester today at 4:00 pm.

The Bronco boys, who lost to Tuckahoe in the first round, won the consolation game against Croton-Harmon, 3-2. Scoring for the Broncos were senior captains Jeb Burnell (2) and Alston Tarry (1). Senior midfielder Harry Colvin, who assisted on the goal to Tarry, was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Valhalla Vikings won the BroncoFest, defeating Croton in the first round and winning over Tuckahoe on Saturday in a 2-1 victory.

The boys’ team is expected to contend for the title this year in an extremely competitive league. In addition to Burnell, Colvin, and Tarry, offensive starters include Luke Doukas, Jimmy Gallo, and Paul Magaud.  Anchoring the defense are four of the sixteen seniors on the team: Captain Mac Crawford, Jack Kiefer, Cameron McKhann, and Mark Sears. Both goalkeepers, sophomore Theo Liao, who recently moved back to Bronxville from London, and freshman Jack Pagano, are new to the squad. 

The boys host two League games this week: this afternoon at 4:30 pm against Rye Neck and Saturday at 10:00 am against Keio Academy.

At the BroncoFest, the Broncos raised money for breast cancer by selling food, drinks, and baked goods. Over $800 dollars will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Bronxville students also ran a 50-50 raffle, and the proceeds will go to the Red Cross for hurricane relief.

Other Bronco News

Football: The Broncos won their first game with a 27-0 shutout over Hastings. George Daskalakis rushed for 135 yards and scored twice, and Damian Meehan ran for 111 yards and had one touchdown.

Field Hockey:  The field hockey team won its fourth game this season with a 6-0 win over Hastings. In that game, Fiona Jones scored two and Hannah Weirens, Claire Kraemer, Holly Ungvary, and Kat Ungvary each scored one. Goalie Katie Gordon had three saves. The Broncos have lost only two games so far this season, one to Class AA Mamaroneck and the other to Class A Scarsdale. LoHud Power Rankings have the Class C Broncos at No. 6, with Scarsdale at No. 5 and Mamaroneck at No. 2.

Cross Country: At the Villa Bears Running Classic held at Van Cortlandt Park last Saturday, Ethan Waggoner won the freshman race, and in the eleventh-grade race, Alex Rizzo placed first and his brother Matt placed third. For the girls, Natalie Weiner placed thirteenth in the varsity race, and Gigi Chrappa placed twenty-second. Avery Widen placed seventh in the freshman race, and Betsy Marshall finished in seventeenth place. Bronxville varsity placed fourth out of 35 schools, junior varsity placed ninth out of 25 schools, and the freshman girls placed second out of 30 teams.

Tennis: The tennis team had a big 5-2 win over Edgemont on Saturday and a 6-1 victory over Keio on Monday. In Monday’s match, singles players Katherine Forst and Olivia Doyle came out on top, and doubles teams Eva Dani and Henriette Schmuck, Katie Formato and Sophia Sheumack, Sarah Goodell and Alexandra Brumbaugh, and Rory Christian and Isabella Patterson won their respective matches. The doubles teams have been extremely strong this year, and the Broncos are first in their league, with a 5-0 record.

Turf Update: The infill is being added to Hayes Field this week.
