Feb. 21, 2018: The Bronco post-season got under way last week, and the boys’ and girls’ track teams won their respective Class C sectional championships. The Section 1 Swimming Championships were also held last week, and the combined New Rochelle-Bronxville swim team placed fourth and earned sectional titles in five events. In individual events, senior Andrew Babyak won the 200 free and 500 free, and New Rochelle senior Michael Lawson won the 50 free. New Rochelle-Bronxville also won both the 200 free and 400 free relays (Lawson, Finn Seibold, Tim Cushman, and Babyak).
Five members of the swim team, Babyak, Lawson, Cushman, Siebold, and diver Mark Sears, all qualified for the state championships, which will be held at the Eisenhower Aquatic Center on Long Island March 1-3.
The girls’ basketball team, seeded No. 5, handily defeated No. 12 Blind Brook, 46-37, in the opening round of the Class B playoffs. Scoring for the Broncos were Nan Carpenter (12), Denise Kinas (11), and Ashley Kaye (12). The Bronco girls will take on No. 4 Valhalla in the quarterfinals today at Valhalla. The boys’ basketball team lost to Dobbs Ferry in the first round of playoffs, 62-53. They finish the season with a 10-9 record.
The Section 1 Indoor Track and Field State Qualifier was supposed to take place on Sunday, but because of the snowstorm, it was postponed until today at 5:30 pm. It is vacation week for The Bronxville School, so some team members who planned to compete in Sunday’s state qualifier meet are unable to compete today because of prior commitments.
There is no distinction between large and small schools at the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships. Section 1 will send the top two individuals for each event, and if the third-place finisher has a state qualifying time, that person will also attend. The state championship meet will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on March 3.
Go Broncos.
