Mar. 28, 2018: The spring sports season has arrived, and despite the snowstorms, the lacrosse teams have been out on the field since early March. Bronxville may be a Class D school, but both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams have had a big presence in the section and the state for the past few years.
The girls’ team has competed at the state tournament every year since 2014 and finished as the state runner-up last year, after losing in double overtime to Skaneateles. The Bronco boys won the state championship in 2014 but have met with some stiff competition in Section 1 for the past few years, losing twice to Pleasantville and once to Westlake. The Panthers have made it to the state semifinals for the past three years, and the Wildcats made it to the state finals last year.
The boys’ team, led by captains Mac Crawford, Dylan James, Nick O'Brien, and Alston Tarry, returns six starters. Top players include seniors Ryan Alberghine, Mac Crawford, Dylan James, Alston Tarry, George Daskalakis, Nick O’Brien, Jack Kiefer, and newcomer Griffin Gelinas, who joined the Broncos this season after playing for the Brunswick School in Connecticut for the last couple of years.
Two players from the boys’ team will go on to play at the college level next year: Tarry has committed to Bucknell, and Gelinas will play for Michigan.
The boys will face some of the top teams in Section 1 this spring. They lost 16-4 to Mamaroneck in their season opener yesterday and will face several teams that are in the top ten in Section 1, including John Jay, Lakeland, and Pleasantville. They open at home against Westport’s Staples High School on Saturday at 11:00 am.
The girls’ team is led by captains Allie Berkery, Nan Carpenter, Grace Randall, and Gabbie Amboss and has many new players, including five freshman and two new sophomores. Key offensive players for the Broncos include Berkery, Fiona Jones, Isabel Sondey, and Anneke Pulkkinen, and key defensive players include Amboss, Randall, Carpenter, and Sally Reynolds. New in goal this year is Caitlin Mooney, a sophomore who played goal on the JV team last year.
Berkery will play for Northwestern in the fall and just this week was named to Lohud’s Elite 11, a list of the top eleven players in all of Section 1.
The girls’ team also has a competitive schedule, with games against Yorktown, Suffern, Rye, Fox Lane, North Shore, and Northport. Coach Sharon Robinson hopes that the strong schedule will prepare the team well for the playoff season.
The Bronco girls open on April 5 at Somers and play another away game against Scarsdale on April 9. They return for their home season opener against Fox Lane on April 11.
Go Broncos.
